Asurion Consumer Research Report: 87% of Amazon Echo owners plan to upgrade to new Echo Show

Through a recent consumer study, Asurion found that the majority of current Amazon Echo owners plan to upgrade to the new Echo Show (87%) once it starts shipping on June 28. However, consumers who do not own an Echo (46% of the consumers surveyed) remain unmotivated to purchase (62%).  According to the study:

Of Current Echo Owners
87% plan to upgrade at some point to the new Echo Show. Primary reasons are:

  • Preference to have the latest technology
  • Intrigued by addition of the 7” screen
  • Desire to have Dolby premium audio
  • Want to make video calls to friends and family using the device

Only 9% surveyed do not plan on purchasing the new device. The primary reason is the opinion that the product is too expensive.

Of Consumers without an Echo
22% of customers surveyed are looking to purchase the Show. The primary reasons are:

  • Preference to have the latest technology
  • Intrigued by the addition of the 7” screen
  • Ability to control other home devices (lights, thermostat)
  • Internet home phone capabilities

Additional findings from the survey convey that privacy issues are not a concern amongst owners and non-owners, with only (4%) and (13%), respectively, citing this as a reason for not choosing to purchase the Echo Show.

Last year, in line with reports that the Echo was the best-selling product, Asurion saw a nearly 400% increase in calls to its tech experts after the holidays. Calls ranged from consumers looking for support on everything from set up, to pairing multiple devices to troubleshooting integration across apps and accounts. Asurion is expecting a similar increase in tech expert support needs later this summer, following the release of the Echo Show.

Based on Asurion’s Amazon Echo survey and call data, many consumers still lack the basic knowledge-set to seamlessly integrate this sort of technology into their lives. These rapid consumer tech advancements cause frustration for consumers and result in a growing “Knowledge Gap” between manufacturers and consumers. In an effort to narrow this gap between new technology and consumers, Asurion’s tech experts work with consumers to ensure they are equipped with the most basic set-up knowledge, including how to pair selected devices, understanding smartphone data usage across these devices and even how to trouble shoot Wi-Fi connection issues so they can get the most out of their tech purchases.

Consumers enrolled in their phone carrier’s protection and support program with Asurion have unlimited access to tech experts who can help them learn, grow and do more with their technology!
