What to do when your PS5 has no sound

Woman with sound issues on Playstation 5

⚡ Fast fix

  • Sound gone? Check Settings > Sound > Audio Output and make sure it’s set to the right device.
  • Quick reset. Unplug your HDMI or headset, then plug it back in firmly.
  • Switch it up. Try changing output (TV ↔ headset) to force the PS5 to reroute audio.
  • Still silent? Restart your PS5 and check Output Device and HDMI Device Type settings again.

Imagine diving into the new God of War: Ragnarök game only to find that your PS5® has no sound. So much for hearing all of Mimir’s lore. However, your sound issues don’t have to keep you out of the rogue-lite action for long. From solving common PlayStation® problems to adding storage to your console—uBreakiFix® by Asurion has you covered. With more than 18 million repairs completed, our experts have the know-how to solve all of your tech care needs. Here’s how you can fix PlayStation 5 audio issues.

Check the HDMI cable

Your first step is to make sure your HDMI cable is connected correctly. The HDMI cable combines both the audio and visual output from the gaming console. If it’s loose or damaged, it can be the source of your sound issues. The HDMI port could also be part of the problem. Read more about what to do if you suspect your PS5 HDMI port is broken.

Check the "Mute All" shortcut

It’s surprisingly easy to accidentally mute the entire system using the DualSense controller. If you see a blinking or solid orange light on your controller’s horizontal button (below the PS button), your audio might be globally muted.

Press and hold the mute button on your controller for one second. If the light turns off, your sound should return.

Check your TV output

Your TV settings can also impact your PS5's audio. Check your TV's audio settings and verify that the audio output is correctly configured to receive sound from the HDMI input where your PS5 is connected. Also, make sure that the TV's volume is turned up and not on mute.

Don’t ditch it, fix it

No matter the issue, our experts can repair your devices fast. Make an appointment or visit your local uBreakiFix by Asurion today.

Use standard HDMI mode

Some TVs and monitors may not support the advanced features of HDMI 2.1. Try switching to standard HDMI mode to see if it resolves your audio problems. Check your TV or monitor's user manual for steps on how to change the HDMI mode, as they can vary from model to model.

Adjust your console sound settings

Check the sound settings on your PS5 console and make sure they’re set up for your audio system or TV. Here’s how you can find those settings:

  1. Go to the PlayStation home screen and select Settings > Sound.
  2. Select Audio Output and then review the settings.

Update software

Software updates can fix bugs that may be causing audio issues, so make sure your PS5 and TV firmware are up to date. Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update to check for updates.

Turn off 3D audio mode

While 3D audio improves the gaming experience, it may cause compatibility issues with some audio systems. Try turning off 3D audio to see if it fixes the sound problem. On your console, go to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio for [your sound device] > toggle off Enable 3D Audio.

Disable Audio Focus (Headphone users)

If you can hear the game music on your headphones but can't hear footsteps or dialogue, a feature called Audio Focus might be misconfigured. This feature is designed to amplify specific frequencies but can make other sounds seem "broken" or silent if set incorrectly.

  1. Go to Settings > Sound > Volume.
  2. Select Audio Focus.
  3. Toggle Use Audio Focus to Off to see if your full range of sound returns.

Enable Dolby Atmos

If you have a high-end sound system but are getting "thin" sound or no sound at all, you may need to manually switch the priority.

  1. Go to Settings > Sound.
  2. Select Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority).
  3. Switch from "Linear PCM" to Dolby Atmos.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.
