How to back up data on your iPad

You can back up data on your iPad using iCloud® or your MacBook®. It's easy. We'll show you how.

Back up your iPad to iCloud

Before you get started, make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi and that you have your Apple® ID and password to sign into iCloud—if you need help, check out our guide on how to set up iCloud. Then follow these simple steps:

  1. Tap Settings, then tap on your name at the top.
  2. Tap iCloud, then select Device Backups.
  3. Tap iCloud Backup.
  4. Toggle on Back Up This iPad. Your tablet will now automatically back up when it's connected to power, locked, and on Wi-Fi.

For a one-time, manual backup, follow steps 1–3 above, then tap Back Up Now.

When you begin a backup, make sure to stay connected to your Wi-Fi network until the process completes. To make sure that the backup is finished, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup. The time of the last successful backup should appear on the screen.

Don’t ditch it, fix it

No matter the issue, our experts can repair your devices fast. Make an appointment or visit your local uBreakiFix by Asurion today.

You can also back up your iPad to your computer. Here's how:

  1. Connect your iPad to your MacBook.
  2. On your MacBook, go to Finder®, then select your iPad.
  3. Click General.
  4. Click Back up all of the data on your iPad to this Mac.
  5. Click Back up Now.

NOTE: When connecting your iPad to your Mac for the first time, make sure to unlock your tablet screen and tap Trust This Computer when prompted.

How to back up data on your Amazon Fire

You can easily back up your vital information on your Amazon Fire tablet using the cloud. Here's how:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Settings.
  2. Tap Device Options.
  3. Tap Backup & Restore.
  4. Turn on Backup & Restore. Your device will back up once daily when connected to Wi-Fi and power.

How to back up data on your Samsung Galaxy tablet

An easy way to save your personal information is to use the backup service from Google®, which is built into all Android™ devices such as your phone. You can also use the backup solutions provided by Samsung. Here's how:

Back up your Galaxy tablet to Google Drive

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accounts and backup, then select Back up data under the Google Drive section.
  3. Toggle on Backup by Google One and tap Back up now.

Back up your Galaxy Tablet using the Samsung Cloud

Samsung tablets use two cloud systems to keep your data safe. Samsung Cloud saves your settings and layout, while Microsoft OneDrive backs up your photos and documents.

  1. Open Settings and tap on your name at the top of the menu.
  2. Tap Samsung Cloud to back up your notes, calendar, and system layouts. Select Back up data, check the items you want to save, and tap Back up now.
  3. Go back to your Samsung account page, tap Linked accounts, and connect a Microsoft OneDrive account to automatically sync your photos, videos, and personal files.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.

FAQ

Does backing up my tablet save my game progress?

Usually, yes. Most modern games save your progress automatically to cloud networks like Apple Game Center or Google Play Games. Just make sure you're logged into your account inside the game.

Will backing up use up my cellular data?

Not by default. Tablets are smart enough to wait until you are securely connected to Wi-Fi and plugged into power before running a full system backup.

What happens if I run out of cloud storage?

Your tablet will stop backing up and send you a "Storage Full" alert. You'll need to clean out old files, or pay a small monthly fee to upgrade your space.

If I delete a photo on my tablet, is it gone from the backup too?

Yes. Cloud backups act like a mirror. If you delete a photo from your camera roll, it will disappear from your backup during the next sync.
