How to Protect Your Privacy Online

It’s a safe bet that a large portion of your life is inside your smartphone, everything from conversations with friends and loved ones to your credit card accounts. Take these steps to make sure your private information stays private.

  • Tip #1: Add a passcode and/or touch ID. Your iPhone or Android can require a passcode — so no one else can access your info. While it might seem like a hassle to type four to six digits every single time you pick up your iPhone, it’s a small price to pay to protect your identity and your money. Newer iPhones—5s or later—use fingerprint technology in lieu of a passcode. This handy capability can also be used with many apps and services, like Apple Pay. Android users can find similar technology available on the Samsung Galaxy A5, Galaxy A9 Pro and Galaxy S7 Edge.
  • Tip #2: Be a smart shopper—look for “https.” HTTP stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol, and the “s” means you’re using a website with a security certificate proving it’s protecting your information in transit. Don’t type your credit card or other financial data into a site that doesn’t say “https.”
  • Tip #3: Clear your cache once in a while. When you click on a web page, your browser makes a copy of that page and stores it in your smartphone’s hard drive. The reason for this is so the page can load more quickly the next time you visit. This copy is called cache, and it’s not a bad idea to clear it out every once in a while, not only to make space on your hard drive, but also to clear out any sites that might be vulnerable to unauthorized page views or “drive-by downloads.”

To clear the cache on an Android phone: Open your browser and tap Menu, then Settings. Then tap Privacy and Security. Finally, tab Clear Cache at the top of the menu.

For iPhone: Press Settings, then scroll down to Safari. Next, scroll down and click “Clear History and Website Data.”
