How to Back Up Your Cell Phone

You know how important backups are for the files on your computer.  But are you also backing up the files on your smartphone? Your cell phone is a computer too!  If you lose or break your phone, those critical photos, music, and other essential files are at risk if you’re not backing up.

Built-In Operating System Support

Whether an Android or an iPhone, the operating system of your smartphone offers automatic cloud backup capabilities to protect critical data, such as photos, passwords, email messages, and the files you’ve created in various apps. You’ll find these automatic backup capabilities in your phone’s settings, and setting them up is a snap.

On Android phones, the Backup Service can store your data and be connected to one or more of your Google accounts.

  1. Connect your device to your Wi-Fi network
  2. Open your phone’s Settings app
  3. Under Personal, tap “Backup & Reset.”
  4. Tap “Back Up My Data” and switch it on.

You’ll see the options for backing up your data, including passwords, preferences and app data, which will all be stored in your Google account.

On iPhones, you can use iCloud to backup your device.

  1. Connect your device to your Wi-Fi network
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Scroll down and tap iCloud.
  4. Once in iCloud, scroll down to tap Backup and make sure that iCloud Backup is switched on.
  5. Tap “Back Up Now”.

Be sure to stay connected to your Wi-Fi network until the process completes.  To make sure that the backup finished: Tap Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, then select your device. The backup should appear in the details with the time and backup size.

Remember to Test & Verify

Once you’ve set up your smartphone’s automatic backup, make sure it’s working properly. Ensure the backup is turned on. Then, delete an unimportant file or two and see if you can restore them.

Once you’ve done this, check your backups periodically to be sure everything is being saved correctly. This isn’t something you need to do every day. More like every few months, when you’ve got a couple minutes of downtime. Sometimes, an operating system or app update can reset your preferences, so it’s a good idea to check your backup plan after an update.

Manual Backup

In addition to automatic backups, you can create manual backups of specific types of files, including photos, by connecting your phone to your computer through a USB cable and copying your data onto the computer.
