How to know it’s time to replace your phone battery

Call 888-477-6832

Your phone battery, much like the one in your car, isn't designed to last forever. Over time, it will inevitably degrade. Under ideal circumstances, you should expect your phone battery to serve you well for 2 to 3 years. And if you're meticulous about caring for your device, it could last even longer.

AT&T ProTech experts are devoted to helping you protect and maintain the technology that plays such a critical role in your daily life. From cleaning your phone to safeguarding it against the elements, we're here to assist-and that includes the health of your battery.

That’s why our tech experts put together this checklist, to help you quickly and easily identify when a battery might need to be replaced.

So, how can you identify a failing phone battery? Here are some signs to watch out for:

Slow response time

Is your phone not as snappy as it used to be? Do your apps take their sweet time to launch? If your device is sluggish, even with a full charge, it might be a signal that your battery needs replacing. Frequent app crashes may also be a sign that your battery is failing, though they’re more likely to be caused by software issues.

Inefficient or erratic charge

If your device struggles to hit a 100% charge, loses power rapidly, or shuts down unexpectedly even though it's fully charged, it’s a clear sign that your battery is on its last legs. Similarly, if your battery level jumps from high to low in a short amount of time, the percentage doesn't seem to decrease at a steady rate, or your phone seems to only function when plugged in, it’s probably time to consider a battery check-up.

Overheating while charging

If your phone becomes uncomfortably warm while charging, it could be an indication of a faulty battery, which is potentially hazardous. In such instances, the safest step is to consult a tech repair expert and have your battery replaced immediately.

Bulging battery

A physically bulging battery may cause a warped screen or issues with your phone housing or case. Bulging batteries are a clear sign of failure, and may even be dangerous. If you see a bulging battery on your device, stop using the phone immediately and consult with a professional as soon as you can.

Remember, these signs could also be symptoms of other issues with your phone, so it's always a good idea to seek professional advice if you're experiencing problems. AT&T Protect Advantage customers can check their battery online or chat with a ProTech expert for help.

Is your smartphone exhibiting any of these symptoms? If so, it might be time for a new battery. Your device is a vital part of your routine, and AT&T experts are committed to ensuring it stays at its best.
