How to change the Wi-Fi network on your Ring doorbell

💡 Need to know

  • Quick reconnect: You can change your Ring doorbell’s Wi-Fi directly through the Ring app—no need to reinstall the device.
  • Keep it close: Make sure your router is within range and that your signal strength is strong before reconnecting.
  • Save time: Switching Wi-Fi doesn’t delete your saved recordings or preferences.

Adding a Ring™ Video Doorbell to your home is a simple way to boost your peace of mind. It helps you keep track of who’s coming and going—so you’ll always know your child made it home safely—and lets you see who’s at the door before you answer. Whether it’s a delivery driver, a salesperson, or a curious neighbor, you’ll never be surprised again.

Before you can start using your camera, though, you’ll need to connect it to your Wi-Fi network.

At Asurion, we set up and fix your favorite home tech. Whether you want to add a Ring doorbell to Google Home® or show a Ring doorbell on your TV, we've got the advice you need. Here's how to make your Ring doorbell change Wi-Fi networks, so you don't miss a beat.

Change Wi-Fi on your Ring doorbell using the Ring app

Maybe you're installing a Ring doorbell for the first time, or you just set up a new router. Either way, you need to figure out how to change the Wi-Fi on your Ring video doorbell.

One of the easiest ways to manage Wi-Fi is through the Ring app, which can be downloaded onto your smartphone. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the app, find your Ring doorbell, and tap the gear icon in the upper right-hand corner.
  2. Tap Device Health > Change Wi-Fi Network.
  3. A pop-up will warn you that you're about to lose access to the doorbell. Tap Change Wi-Fi Network again.
  4. Your Ring doorbell will flash blue when it's searching for an available internet connection. Find your home network in the list and tap Join.
  5. Enter your Wi-Fi password to connect the Ring doorbell to your new network.

On some models, you'll need to put your doorbell into setup mode first. Just press the large black button on the front of the doorbell. When a light starts spinning, open the Ring app to finish the Wi-Fi change.

What happens to your saved settings when you switch to a different network?

When you update the Wi-Fi settings on your Ring device, it will briefly go offline. That's because it's not connected to the internet during the few minutes it takes you to complete the Ring doorbell network change.

However, all your previous settings will remain unchanged when you reconnect the Ring doorbell. All of your old recordings will still be there, too. It's like using the local bookstore's Wi-Fi on your smartphone while you sip coffee. Nothing changes except for where you're connected.

When you may need to reset the device

If you run into Ring device connection issues, you may need to start from scratch. Here's how to reset it:

  1. Hold the setup button for 20 seconds. This will factory reset your doorbell, erasing all the settings.
  2. Open the Ring app and tap Set Up a Device > Doorbells.
  3. Scan the QR code on the back of your doorbell with your phone.
  4. Add a name for your device, such as “Front Doorbell.”
  5. Follow the installation wizard to complete the setup process and switch the Wi-Fi for your Ring device.

This option is time-consuming, so only use it as a last resort if you can't figure out how to change Wi-Fi on your Ring doorbell.

Fixing Wi-Fi connection issues

You've carefully followed this Ring doorbell setup guide, but it's still stubbornly offline. Don't order a new device just yet. Try these Ring doorbell troubleshooting tips first:

  • Double-check your password: Make sure you’re capitalizing the correct letters and adding any special characters. If your Wi-Fi password is “GameofThronesRuLeS!,” then “gameofthronesrules!” won’t work.
  • Restart everything: Reset the router and modem. That could be as simple as unplugging them or holding down their power buttons for 10 seconds.
  • Check your Wi-Fi band: Most Ring devices work on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, not 5GHz. Ensure you’re connecting to the correct one.
  • Add a Wi-Fi extender: If the signal is weak, place an extender halfway between your router and the Ring doorbell to strengthen coverage.
