How to change Wi-Fi password

After all those "Stranger Things" marathons, your Netflix® password is as familiar as your birthdate. But unless your guests are constantly hounding you for your Wi-Fi login, your home network password probably rarely crosses your mind. If you want to improve your Wi-Fi security, though, it's good to switch up this password.

At Asurion, our experts have the knowledge you need to get and stay online. Whether you’re trying to figure out how to share Wi-Fi passwords in smartphones or are annoyed because your phone won't connect to Wi-Fi, we can solve your connectivity woes.

Here’s how to change wireless network passwords and Wi-Fi troubleshooting tips.

Change your Wi-Fi password using a router’s admin panel

Updating your Wi-Fi password is one of the simplest, yet most often ignored, internet safety tips. Still using the simple string of numbers that came with your router? That’s practically an open invitation to hackers—or a freeloading neighbor.

To change the password in your network settings, follow these steps:

  • Connect to your Wi-Fi with your smartphone or laptop.
  • Open a web browser, such as Google Chrome®.
  • Type in your browser’s IP address, which looks something like this: 192.168.1.1. Most routers have a label with this number, or you can look it up in your smartphone’s Wi-Fi settings (more on that below).
  • Sign in to the router’s admin panel with your username and password.
  • Go to Wireless Settings or Security Settings.
  • Enter a new, strong Wi-Fi password and save your changes. Check out our guide to how to create a strong password for helpful tips.

Change your Wi-Fi password using your ISP’s app or portal

Many internet providers let you manage Wi-Fi devices through their websites or mobile apps. That’s helpful when you don’t feel like trudging across your house to look at the router.

Here’s how to change your wireless network name and password with these tools:

  • Download your provider’s app or log into their website.
  • Find the Wi-Fi settings page in the menu or sidebar.
  • Select your network and choose Change Password.
  • Reset your Wi-Fi password.
  • Save the changes.

Your updated Wi-Fi password should be memorable but impossible for even close friends to guess. Try using abbreviations and adding numbers.

Reconnect devices after changing your Wi-Fi password

When you update your Wi-Fi password, your devices won’t automatically adjust. To keep your network secure, you’ll need to reconnect each one—phones, laptops, smart home devices, even your fridge—using the new password.

On Android

  • Open Settings.
  • Tap Network & Internet, then choose Internet.
  • Select your network and tap Forget (or the trash can icon) to remove the old login.
  • Reconnect by selecting your network and entering the new password.

On iPhone

  • Open Settings and tap Wi-Fi.
  • Tap the info (i) icon next to your current network.
  • Select Forget This Network.
  • Restart your iPhone.
  • Return to Wi-Fi settings, choose your network, and enter the new password.

Repeat this process for every device connected to your home network—from Ring™ cameras to smart appliances. It may take a few minutes, but you’ll know your Wi-Fi is secure and hackers are locked out.

Troubleshooting common issues

You’ve updated your Wi-Fi password, but your device still shows “Internet is unavailable.” Here are some quick fixes to try:

  • Restart your router and device. After changing your password, some phones and laptops won’t reconnect right away. Restart both the device and router, then try again.
  • Double-check the password. Even a missed capital letter or symbol can block access. Keep your new password written in a safe place for reference.
  • Log back into your router or ISP app. If you forgot the new code, you can usually find it in your router’s admin panel or through your provider’s app.
  • Factory reset your router. Still locked out? Resetting your router restores the default settings so you can start fresh.
