How to connect your Vizio TV to Wi-Fi

Your Vizio® TV is—quite literally—a window to your favorite movies and TV shows. However, you’ll need a Wi-Fi connection to access streaming apps like Hulu and Netflix. Luckily, getting your TV online can be relatively straightforward, even if you’ve encountered issues in the past.

At Asurion, our experts are ready to help with all your tech care needs. If your smart TV won't connect to Wi-Fi or you’re shopping for extended warranties for tech, we’ve got the right answers. This guide walks you through how to connect a Vizio TV to Wi-Fi and get back to streaming ASAP.

Set up your Vizio TV’s Wi-Fi connection

Connecting to Wi-Fi is the most important step in your Vizio smart TV setup. Without it, you won’t be able to binge-watch Yellowstone or stream your Spotify playlists.

Here’s how to set up your Vizio TV for the first time or reset it if your connection is being finicky:

  1. Turn on the television with the remote.
  2. Press the Menu or gear icon button. For some models, you may need to start with All Settings.
  3. Click Network > Choose your network.
  4. Pick your home Wi-Fi network from the list.
  5. Use the on-screen keyboard to enter your Wi-Fi password. Make sure you use capital letters and special characters exactly. If you type in “mydoglunarocks13” when it should be “MyDoglunarOCKS13,” your Vizio TV won’t connect.
  6. Select Connect.
  7. Wait for the pop-up confirmation that your Vizio TV is connected to Wi-Fi—that’s how you’ll know it’s online and ready for streaming.

Reconnect your TV after a password or router change

Switching up your Wi-Fi password every few months helps keep your network secure. You may also need to replace your router if it stops working. Big changes like these will affect your Vizio TV’s internet connection, so don’t be surprised when Netflix stops loading.

The good news is you probably don’t need a complete reset. Here’s how to quickly change the Wi-Fi on your Vizio TV:

  1. Press Menu on your remote or mobile app.
  2. Click Network > Wireless.
  3. Select your updated Wi-Fi network from the list.
  4. Enter your new password and confirm the connection.

Don’t panic if your Vizio TV doesn’t automatically prompt you to reconnect. You can force a reset by going into your Vizio TV network settings and clicking Manual Setup.

Troubleshoot Wi-Fi issues on your Vizio TV

Okay, you’ve followed this smart TV connection guide perfectly, but you’re still getting an error message. Frustrating, but fixable. Get online in a jiffy with these Vizio TV troubleshooting tips.

Restart everything

Sometimes, a quick reset is all you need to fix Wi-Fi issues with your Vizio TV. Switch off the television, router, and modem one at a time.

After a few seconds, power all the devices back on and try to connect your Vizio TV to Wi-Fi again.

Switch up your layout

If your TV is too far from the router, the Wi-Fi signal may not reach it. Try moving the TV closer, or shift furniture—like a large bookcase—that could be blocking the connection.

Check for updates

If you’re trying to connect an older Vizio TV to Wi-Fi, the firmware may be outdated. Check for new versions by clicking Settings > System > Check for Updates.

Forget the network

Resetting your connection is another easy Vizio TV network fix:

  1. Click Menu > Settings > Network.
  2. Select Manual Setup.
  3. Turn DHCP on and off.
  4. From there, you should be able to reselect your network and reconnect.

Connect to Ethernet

If your wireless signal keeps flickering in and out, consider using an Ethernet cable to connect your smart TV and router. Sometimes, a hardwired connection is the ticket to stable streaming.

Try a factory reset

Still stuck? A factory reset lets you set up your Vizio TV from scratch. However, it will also erase all your custom settings, so only try it if all the other steps have failed:

  1. Click Menu or the Gear icon.
  2. Choose Admin & Privacy. For some TV models, you’ll need to click System or All Settings first.
  3. Select Reset to Factory.
