At Asurion, we help you get more from your tech—from setup to troubleshooting. Here’s how to disable Google Assistant on Android while keeping other phone features working the way you like.

Turn off “Hey Google” voice activation

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps (or Apps & notifications).
  3. Tap Assistant (or Default apps > Digital assistant app).
  4. Tap Hey Google & Voice Match.
  5. Turn off Hey Google.

This stops the assistant from listening for the wake phrase.

Remove Google Assistant as the default digital assistant

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps > Default apps.
  3. Tap Digital assistant app.
  4. Choose None (or select another app you prefer).

Now, long‑press gestures won’t launch Google Assistant.

Disable long‑press Power or Home button launch

On many phones, pressing and holding the Power or Home button opens Assistant. You can turn that off:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap System (or Additional settings).
  3. Tap Gestures (or Buttons).
  4. Turn off Press & hold Power for Assistant or change Home button action to None.

Turn off Google Assistant entirely in the Google app

  1. Open the Google app.
  2. Tap your profile picture > Settings.
  3. Tap Google Assistant.
  4. Tap General.
  5. Turn off Google Assistant.

Control Assistant on the lock screen

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps > Assistant (or open the Google app** > your profile > Settings > Google Assistant).
  3. Tap Lock screen.
  4. Turn off Allow Assistant on lock screen.

Manage microphone permissions (optional)

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps and choose Google.
  3. Tap Permissions > Microphone.
  4. Select Don’t allow.

This prevents the Google app from using the mic for Assistant. Other features that use the mic may also be affected.

Troubleshooting if Assistant keeps turning back on

  • Make sure you turned off Hey Google in Voice Match.
  • Check that Digital assistant app is set to None.
  • Update the Google app in the Play Store and restart your phone.
  • If you use a headset or car system, disable its Assistant trigger in the device’s app or Bluetooth settings.
