How to enable two-factor authentication on iPhone
Your Apple® ID is the key to your iPhone®, iCloud®, and all your Apple services. If someone gets access to it, they could reach your photos, messages, and payment info. To keep your account secure, Apple offers two-factor authentication (2FA), which adds an extra layer of protection. At Asurion, we help millions of people stay safe online every day—so you can count on our experts to guide you through setting it up.
What is two-factor authentication?
Two-factor authentication is a security feature that requires both your password and a second step—like a code sent to your trusted device—to sign in to your Apple ID. Even if someone knows your password, they can’t access your account without that code. To make your account even stronger, see our guide on how to create a strong password.
How to turn on two-factor authentication on iPhone
Follow these steps to enable it:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your Apple ID name at the top.
- Select Password & Security.
- Tap Turn On Two-Factor Authentication.
- Tap Continue.
- Enter the phone number you want to use to receive verification codes, then choose whether you’d like to get them by text message or phone call.
- Tap Next and enter the code sent to your number to finish setup.
Once it’s enabled, you’ll be asked for a code whenever you sign in to your Apple ID on a new device. For more help protecting your Apple account, check out what is iCloud and how do I use it.
How two-factor authentication works
When you sign in with your Apple ID on a new device, you’ll need:
- Your password.
- A six-digit verification code sent to one of your trusted devices or phone numbers.
This prevents someone else from using your account, even if they have your password. If you ever get locked out, here’s how to recover your Apple ID or password.
Why you should enable two-factor authentication
Turning on two-factor authentication can:
- Protect your Apple ID and personal data from hackers.
- Add an extra security step when signing in on new devices.
- Give you peace of mind knowing your account is safer.

Can I turn off two-factor authentication?
No. Once you’ve turned it on for your Apple ID, you can’t disable it. This is part of Apple’s effort to increase account security.
What if I lose access to my trusted device?
You can still receive a verification code on your trusted phone number or request account recovery through Apple’s support.
Does two-factor authentication work with all Apple devices?
Yes. As long as your devices are signed in with the same Apple ID, they’ll be able to receive verification codes.
