How to use Find My Chromebook to locate your computer

It’s easy to misplace your Chromebook—maybe it slipped between couch cushions or you left it in class. If you’ve lost it, don’t worry. Google™ makes it simple to track it down using the Find My Device feature built into your Chromebook. At Asurion, we help millions of people protect and troubleshoot their tech. From showing you how to back up your computer to what to do if your laptop won’t turn on, our experts have you covered. Here’s how to use Find My Chromebook to locate your computer and what to do if it’s lost or stolen.

How Find My Chromebook works

Find My Chromebook is part of Google’s Find My Device service. When it’s turned on, you can use your Google Account to:

  • See the last known location of your Chromebook.
  • View the date and time it was last online.
  • Lock your device or sign out remotely.

Keep in mind, this feature only works if your Chromebook is connected to Wi-Fi and has Location Services turned on.

How to turn on Find My Device on your Chromebook

Find My Device is usually turned on by default, but it’s a good idea to double-check. Here’s how:

  • Open Settings on your Chromebook.
  • Select Security and Privacy, then go to Location.
  • Turn on Location Services.
  • Return to Security and Privacy, then select Find My Device.
  • Make sure the feature is turned on.

How to find your lost Chromebook

Once Find My Device is set up, follow these steps to locate your Chromebook:

  • On another device, go to google.com/android/find.
  • Sign in with the same Google Account you use on your Chromebook.
  • Select your Chromebook from the list of devices.
  • If the device is online, you’ll see its last known location.

If your Chromebook is online, you can also lock it or sign out of your Google Account to protect your personal information. For more ways to keep your data safe, check out our guide to protecting your online privacy.

What to do if your Chromebook is offline

If the device is offline or you can’t see its location, try the following:

  • Check back later—the location may update when the Chromebook reconnects to Wi-Fi.
  • Visit myaccount.google.com to view recent logins and account activity.
  • If the device belongs to a school, contact your IT administrator.
  • For personal devices, consider filing a police report or contacting your insurance provider.

If you have protection through Asurion or uBreakiFix® by Asurion, we can help you file a claim and get a replacement device. We also offer support for common issues like how to clean your laptop screen or troubleshooting a Chromebook that won’t turn on.
