It’s frustrating—and a little concerning—especially if you rely on your Lenovo® laptop for work or school.

At Asurion, our experts see—and fix—screen issues all the time. Luckily, many Lenovo screen flickering problems can be fixed with a few targeted steps. Here’s how to figure out what’s causing it—and what to do next.

Fix driver and refresh rate conflicts

Start with the simplest fix when your Lenovo display is flickering — restart your computer. Often, a simple reboot is enough to sort out any minor glitches or bugs that could be causing the flickering.

Try a hard restart:

  1. Hold down the power button for at least 10 to 15 seconds to force a shutdown.
  2. Power the computer back on.

After rebooting, if the flickering persists:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Check whether the screen flickers in Task Manager.

Your next step is updating your Lenovo display and GPU drivers. On the official Lenovo Support website, download and install the latest drivers.

Try adjusting the refresh rate:

  1. Go to Display Settings > Advanced Display Settings.
  2. Change the refresh rate to match the specs for your laptop.

Disable adaptive sync or power-based display switching:

  1. Go to System > Display > Brightness.
  2. Turn off Change brightness based on content.

Update your Lenovo computer if there’s an update available. Close any unnecessary apps that might strain your GPU.

As a last resort:

  1. Back up any important data.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Go to Systems > Recovery.
  4. Under Reset this PC, select Reset PC.
  5. Choose Remove everything to complete a full factory reset.

Keep in mind that a factory reset clears all your data, apps, and settings.

Check power and BIOS-related settings

Try switching power sources from battery to AC and adjusting brightness and timeout settings.

To update the BIOS:

  1. Open the Lenovo Vantage app.
  2. Choose System Update.
  3. Check for BIOS or firmware updates.
  4. Make sure you’re connected to the AC adapter with at least 30% battery.
  5. Download and install available updates.

To reset BIOS display settings:

  1. Restart your laptop.
  2. When the logo appears, press F1 or F2 repeatedly.
  3. Press F9 to load default settings.
  4. Press F10 to save and reboot.

Rule out cable and hardware problems

Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV. If the lines don’t appear on the external display, the issue is probably with your laptop screen or ribbon cable.

Power off the laptop and disconnect any power sources before opening the casing. Check for loose or damaged internal cables and remove dust or debris.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.
