How to fix it when your smart TV Ethernet isn’t working

A wired internet connection can give your smart TV a faster and more stable signal than Wi-Fi. But what if your Ethernet connection suddenly stops working? Don’t worry—our experts at Asurion help millions of people get the most out of their tech, including their smart TVs. Here's what to do when your TV won’t connect to the internet with an Ethernet cable.

1. Check your Ethernet cable and ports

Start with the basics. Make sure the Ethernet cable is securely plugged into both your smart TV and your router. If the cable looks damaged or bent, try using a different one.

Also, check the ports. Gently remove and reinsert the cable to be sure it clicks into place. If your TV has more than one LAN port, try switching to another one.

2. Restart your devices

Sometimes, restarting can fix minor connection problems.

  • Turn off your smart TV and unplug it from the power outlet.
  • Unplug your router and modem.
  • Wait 30 seconds.
  • Plug your modem back in, then your router.
  • Once the lights are stable, plug your TV back in and turn it on.

Check if the Ethernet connection is working again.

3. Make sure your TV is set to use a wired connection

Your smart TV may still be trying to connect to Wi-Fi. Go to your Network settings and switch the connection type to Wired or Ethernet. You may need to select Connect or Enable wired connection.

If your TV doesn’t detect the Ethernet, move on to the next step.

4. Test your internet connection

To make sure the issue isn’t your network:

  • Connect another device (like a laptop) to the same Ethernet cable.
  • If it doesn’t connect either, the problem is likely with your router or modem.

Try resetting your router or contacting your internet provider for help.

5. Update your smart TV software

Outdated software can cause network issues. Go to your TV's Settings and look for Software Update or System Update. If there’s an update available, install it and restart your TV.

6. Try a static IP address

If your TV still won’t connect, try setting a static IP address:

  1. Go to Network Settings > IP Settings.
  2. Change the mode from Automatic to Manual.
  3. Enter a static IP address, like 192.168.1.100, and use your router’s IP for the Gateway.
  4. Save your changes and test the connection.

If you’re not sure what to enter, check with your internet provider.

7. Reset your TV’s network settings

This step will remove all saved Wi-Fi networks and custom settings:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Network > Reset Network (the path may vary by brand).
  2. Confirm the reset and restart your TV.
  3. Try connecting with the Ethernet cable again.

8. Contact a repair expert

If none of these steps work, your Ethernet port might be damaged. A tech expert at your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store can check it and help you get back online.
