How to fix Xbox Series X controller not responding

You’re fired up for a big session, but your Xbox Series X™ controller is stone-cold unresponsive—and your game’s stuck at the start screen. Maybe the buttons don’t work, maybe it just won’t connect, or maybe it’s flashing but doing nothing. We’ve all been there. Don’t sweat it—controller problems like this are super common, and with the right moves, you can usually fix things in minutes.

At Asurion, our gaming experts deal with finicky controllers all the time. Here’s what to try if your Xbox controller stops working—so you can get back to the action.

Check your batteries or power source

Always start with the basics. Sometimes your controller just needs a little juice.

  • If you’re using AA batteries: Swap in a fresh set.
  • If you’ve got a rechargeable battery pack: Plug it into your console with a USB-C cable and charge it up.
  • Still nothing? Try using the controller with the USB-C cable connected directly to your Xbox.

Restart the controller

A quick reboot can unfreeze a stubborn controller.

  1. Press and hold the Xbox button on your controller for 10 seconds.
  2. Wait a few seconds, then hit the Xbox button again to power it back on.

Reconnect the controller to the console

If your controller isn’t paired, it won’t respond—no matter how many times you mash the buttons.

  1. Press the Pair button on your Xbox Series X console.
  2. Hold the Pair button on top of your controller until the Xbox button starts flashing.
  3. Wait for the light to stop flashing—now you’re reconnected.

You can also plug your controller straight into the console with a USB-C cable to establish a direct connection.

Update your controller firmware

Outdated software can cause weird controller behavior or missed inputs.

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller.
  2. Go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.
  3. Select your controller, then choose the three-dot icon.
  4. If an update is available, just follow the prompts.

Test with another controller or device

Let’s figure out if the controller or the console is the culprit:

  • Try connecting your Xbox controller to another Xbox, or even a Windows® PC.
  • If it works somewhere else, you might need to check your console’s settings or update its firmware.

If you’ve tried everything and your controller still won’t respond, bring it to your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store for some pro-level troubleshooting or repair.

FAQ

Why is my Xbox Series X controller not connecting?

It could be low batteries, a firmware hiccup, or a pairing glitch. Restarting and reconnecting usually sorts it out.

Can I use my Xbox controller while it’s charging?

Yep! As long as it’s plugged in with a USB-C cable, you can game and charge at the same time.

What if my controller still won’t work on another device?

If it’s not responding on any console or PC, there might be a hardware defect. Time for a repair or replacement.

Will resetting my Xbox fix controller problems?

Sometimes, yes! If all else fails, try restarting your console or doing a software reset—it can solve deeper connection issues.
