Google Home® makes it easy to get answers to your questions, play music, and control connected home devices—all from one convenient hub. But it’s only useful when you can actually hear the content at an appropriate volume level.
If you’ve noticed your Google Home volume is often too loud or too quiet, don’t worry. It’s a very common problem, and there’s often a quick fix for it, too. At Asurion, we’re here to help you get the most out of your tech, from smartphones and laptops to smart home devices. Here’s a guide to adjusting the volume on your Google Home device.
Understand why your Google Home volume changes
There are a few reasons your Google Home volume may change from the level you set. You may have accidentally adjusted the volume controls by touching your device.
Keep in mind that timers and alarms generally have separate volume controls from media and Google Assistant®. If you use Google Assistant commands to boost the volume, like by saying, “Hey Google, increase the volume to 85%,” the new volume level will only apply to media and the voice assistant. If the media is muted, your Google Assistant will speak at a low volume of 5%.
Another possibility is that you have routines enabled that affect your Google Home volume control. A routine is an automation that prompts your Google Home to take certain actions at specified times. For example, you might have a personal morning Routine. You could set up this Routine to automatically increase the thermostat, turn on compatible smart lights, and play the news at a set volume level.
Check whether this is the case in the Google Home app:
- Go to Routines.
- Select a Routine to see if it includes any volume controls.
- If necessary, edit the routine by selecting an element and changing it. Delete a routine by selecting Delete > Delete Routine.
Changing volume levels may come down to something as simple as a new software update, too. In that case, simply adjust the volume back to your desired level.
Or, it may be the mode your Google Home device is in. With Night Mode enabled, your voice assistant may have a lower maximum volume. Turn off Night Mode or adjust the volume in Night Mode for more control.

Adjust volume using the Google Home app
While voice controls for adjusting the volume on your Google Home are convenient, you have more options in the Google Home app. Follow these steps to change the volume on your Google Home Mini or other Google Home device in the app:
- Open the Google Home app on your mobile device. You can also use the Google Home app on a PC.
- Select the device you want to change the volume for.
- Use the volume slider to adjust the volume up or down.
The volume slider will adjust the volume for media and the voice assistant. To adjust the volume for alarms and timers:
- Go to Settings > Audio > Alarms & Timers.
- Adjust the volume to your desired level.
Set default volume preferences
Rather than manually adjusting the volume on your Google Home Mini or other Google Home device, you can set up routines with preset volume levels.
- Open the Google Home app.
- Choose Routines below Popular settings.
- Select New + > Personal or Household.
- Select a starter and an action. For example, you might pick a time like 8 a.m. for your starter. The action might then be to set the volume to 50% and read the morning weather.
- Select Save.
Generally, your Google Home should maintain the last used volume level until you change it manually or through a routine. Adjusting your settings may help resolve inconsistent sound levels.
If you change the settings, but they don’t seem to take effect, you may need to factory reset your Google Home. This will restore the device to factory settings, and you’ll have to set it up again. Make sure to connect Google Home to Wi-Fi and pair it back to your Google Home app.
