How to set up dual monitors

💡 Need to know

  • Match your ports first. Check your computer’s output and your monitor’s input before buying cables.
  • Extended mode boosts productivity. Mirroring shows the same screen—extending gives you more space.
  • If nothing appears, restart. A simple reboot often forces the system to detect both monitors.

No matter how big your computer screen is, it can get inconvenient trying to manage lots of windows all in the same place, even with a split-screen option. Dual monitors give you plenty of extra screen real estate. You’ll be able to compare documents and apps side by side without switching windows, boosting productivity.

If you’re worried about the setup process, don’t be—it’s more straightforward than you think. And at Asurion, we’ve got your back. With our years of experience fixing and setting up tech, we can teach you how to set up dual monitors with no fuss.

Connect your monitors and turn on

Start by plugging in your new monitors and powering them on.

Then get cords that fit your computer’s available output ports and the monitors’ input ports. For example, you might need a DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable or a DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cable. Some monitors may support USB-C connections, as do many smartphone chargers.

Make sure that the monitors are ready to be connected. They may display a blue or black screen with a notice that no input is detected. That’s okay for now; it just means they're not hooked up to the computer yet.

Connect your hardware and power on

Follow these steps on how to connect dual monitors to a laptop or desktop computer:

  1. Hold down the Power button to turn off your computer.
  2. Plug the cables into the appropriate ports on the monitors and your computer.
  3. Press and hold the Power button to turn on your computer and wait for it to start up.

If everything is turned on and properly connected, your computer should automatically detect the new monitors and display both.

Configure display settings on Windows or Mac

Typically, computers automatically set up a new external monitor as a mirrored display. This means that whatever you see on your main computer screen shows up exactly the same on the other monitor.

While mirrored displays are useful in some situations, you may prefer the second monitor to act as an extension of your screen. Follow these steps to set up an additional monitor to act as a single continuous desktop.

For dual monitor setup on Windows® 10 and 11:

  1. Go to Start > Settings > System.
  2. Choose Display.
  3. Click Identify to show display numbers on each screen.
  4. If mirrored, select Duplicate these displays and choose Extend these displays instead.
  5. Click and drag the display images to match your physical setup.

For example, if you have your laptop on the right (Display 1) and your monitor on the left (Display 2), order the digital displays 2-1. Having the displays in the correct order, left to right, will help you move windows intuitively between both screens.

To arrange dual monitors on a Mac®:

  1. Select the Apple® menu and go to System Settings/System Preferences.
  2. Select Displays.
  3. Select the external monitor. In the Use as drop-down, choose Extended Display.
  4. Select Arrange to position the displays correctly.

Tips for getting the most out of your dual monitor setup

It’s totally normal to encounter display issues with a computer monitor, whether during setup or later. Try these troubleshooting tips:

  • Check that both ends of the cable connections are firmly plugged in.
  • Try a different cable or port.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Update your graphics driver.
  • Check your display settings to detect additional screens.
  • Choose one display as the default display so programs open there automatically.
  • Consider getting a protection plan to protect your new monitors.

FAQ

Why isn’t my second monitor being detected?

Make sure both cables are securely connected and powered on. Then go to display settings and choose Detect. Restarting your computer often solves detection issues.

How do I extend my screen instead of mirroring it?

On Windows, go to Display settings and select Extend these displays. On Mac, choose Extended Display in the Displays menu.

Can I use two monitors with a laptop?

Yes, as long as your laptop has the correct output ports or supports a docking station. Some laptops may require adapters.

Why does my monitor say “No Signal”?

This usually means the cable isn’t connected properly or the wrong input source is selected on the monitor.
