How to update Alexa software

Your Alexa™ speaker does a lot—from playing music to answering questions and controlling your smart home. But to keep it running smoothly, it needs the latest software. Updates usually happen on their own, but sometimes you’ll need to give Alexa a little help.
At Asurion, our experts fix and troubleshoot smart devices every day. Whether you'd like to add new Alexa skills to your Amazon Echo™ or explore the best smart home cameras, we can help. Here’s how to check if your Alexa device is up to date—and what to do if it’s not.
How to check for software updates
Check which software version the Alexa device has.
- Open the Alexa app on your smartphone.
- Tap Devices > Echo & Alexa.
- Tap your device.
- Tap About to view the software version.
Amazon maintains a list of current software versions on its website. Compare the version listed for your device in the Alexa app with the Amazon list to confirm it's up to date.

FAQ
How long does it take for Alexa to update?
Most updates happen quietly in the background and only take a few minutes—usually when the device is idle. You might notice Alexa’s ring light briefly spinning blue while it's updating, but you won’t need to do anything.
Can I force an Alexa update?
Sort of. You can’t manually download an update like with a phone, but you can say, “Alexa, check for software updates” to prompt the device to install one if it's available. Just make sure your Echo is connected to Wi-Fi and plugged in.
Why isn’t my Alexa updating?
If your Alexa device isn’t updating, check that it’s connected to Wi-Fi and not muted. A weak signal or power issue can delay the update. Restarting your Echo and router can also help get things moving.
Does Alexa need to be on overnight to update?
Nope—it doesn’t have to be on overnight, but updates typically install when Alexa is idle. Leaving it plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi during downtime (like overnight) just makes it more likely to update without interruptions.
Will I lose my settings or skills after an update?
Not at all. Updates won’t erase your routines, preferences, or skills. Everything you’ve set up—like smart home devices or music services—will stay just the way you left it.
