How to update Alexa software

Your Alexa™ speaker does a lot—from playing music to answering questions and controlling your smart home. But to keep it running smoothly, it needs the latest software. Updates usually happen on their own, but sometimes you’ll need to give Alexa a little help.

How to check for software updates
Check which software version the Alexa device has.
- Open the Alexa app on your smartphone.
- Tap Devices > Echo & Alexa.
- Tap your device.
- Tap About to view the software version.
Amazon maintains a list of current software versions on its website. Compare the version listed for your device in the Alexa app with the Amazon list to confirm it's up to date.
How to update Alexa software
- Verify Amazon Alexa has an active Wi-Fi connection.
- Say, "Alexa, check for software updates."
- Alexa retrieves available updates and installs them.
How to update Echo Dot software
- Verify the Echo Dot has an active Wi-Fi connection.
- Say, "Check for software updates."
- Wait for the installation process to complete.
How to keep Alexa updated automatically
Alexa receives automatic updates when connected to Wi-Fi. If you recently reset the device, connect it to Wi-Fi to retrieve available updates.
