If your iPad® keyboard looks tiny or awkwardly floating, don’t worry—you didn’t break anything. Apple® added flexible keyboard modes to make typing easier, but sometimes it switches sizes without you meaning to.
At Asurion, we help people fix everyday tech frustrations fast. Whether you're troubleshooting an iPad that won’t connect to Wi-Fi or adjusting settings after an update, we’ve got your back. Here’s how to make your iPad keyboard bigger in seconds.
Why your iPad keyboard got smaller
The iPad keyboard usually shrinks because it’s in Floating Keyboard mode. This mode is designed for one-handed typing. It moves the keyboard to a smaller, phone-sized layout that floats around the screen.
Another reason it may look smaller is Split Keyboard mode, where the keyboard divides into two halves for thumb typing.
In some cases, Display Zoom or accessibility settings can also change how large the keyboard appears.

How to make the iPad keyboard bigger
There are a few paths you can take to restore your iPad keyboard to a size actually viewable by human eyes:
Switch from Floating Keyboard to Full Keyboard
If your keyboard is floating:
- Place two fingers on the small keyboard.
- Spread them apart—like zooming in on a photo.
The keyboard will instantly snap back to full size.
You can also:
- Tap the three dots on the keyboard.
- Select Full.
Turn off Floating mode from the keyboard menu
- Tap and hold the keyboard icon in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Dock.
This locks the keyboard back into its full-width position.
Disable Split Keyboard
If your keyboard is split into two halves:
- Tap and hold the keyboard icon.
- Tap Merge.
The keyboard will return to normal size.
Adjust Display Zoom settings
If the keyboard still looks small, your display settings may be affecting it.
- Go to Settings > Display & Brightness.
- Tap Display Zoom.
- Select Standard if it’s set to Zoomed.
Display Zoom changes how content scales across your screen, including the keyboard.
Restart your iPad if settings don’t stick
Sometimes a temporary glitch keeps the keyboard from resizing properly.
- Press and hold the top button and either volume button.
- Drag the slider to power off.
- Turn it back on after a few seconds.
This clears minor interface glitches.
