Safari Bookmarks: How to add, delete, import, and export

It's frustrating when you need help remembering the exact web address to your doctor's health portal or your child’s school calendar, but with Safari® bookmarks, you can keep your favorite sites just a click away. Whether you're new to Safari or a long-time user, understanding how to manage your bookmarks can improve your browsing experience and save you time.

Asurion Experts show you all the cool things your tech can do, whether you want to connect your Macbook® to your TV or try out smart plugs. Here’s our guide on how to use Safari bookmarks.

How to add Safari bookmarks

Adding bookmarks in Safari is a breeze—here's how you can save your favorite sites for easy access:

  1. Open Safari, and go to the website you want to bookmark.
  2. Click or tap the Share button in the toolbar (it looks like a square with an arrow pointing up), and select Add Bookmark. You can also use the shortcut Command (⌘) + D.
  3. Decide whether you want your bookmark to live in the Favorites folder for easy access or in another folder for better organization.
  4. Name your bookmark and add any tags if necessary. Tags can help you find bookmarks faster, especially if you accumulate a lot.
  5. Click Add to save your bookmark.

Tips for organizing your bookmarks

  • Use folders. Group related websites into bookmark folders. For example, you could have a folder for work-related sites, one for personal interests, and another for frequently visited sites. To set it up, click Bookmarks>Add Bookmark Folder, then type the name of your folder.
  • Name accurately. Keep bookmark titles short and descriptive so you can  quickly identify them in your bookmark list.

How to delete Safari bookmarks

Over time, your collection of bookmarks might include sites you no longer visit. Clean out these old bookmarks to keep your browser organized and efficient. Here's how to delete bookmarks in Safari:

  1. Click or tap the Bookmarks menu, and select Edit Bookmarks to view all your saved bookmarks.
  2. Browse your bookmarks or use the search bar to find the one you want to remove.
  3. Right-click (or Control-click) the bookmark, and select Delete. You can also choose the bookmark and press the delete key on your keyboard.

How to export Safari bookmarks

Exporting bookmarks from Safari helps back up your bookmarks or transfer them to another browser. Follow these simple steps to export your bookmarks:

  1. From the Safari menu, select File>Export Bookmarks.
  2. Safari will prompt you to choose a location to save the file. Select your desired location, and click or tap Save.

How to import Safari bookmarks

Whether you just got a new laptop or you’re merely changing default browsers, importing bookmarks to Safari is straightforward. Here's how you do it:

From other browsers to Safari

  1. Start by launching Safari on your computer.
  2. In the Safari menu, click or tap File >Import From > Bookmarks HTML File.
  3. Choose the HTML file containing your bookmarks.
  4. Follow the prompts to complete the import process. Once you’re done, you can find your imported bookmarks in the Favorites or Bookmarks menu.

Importing bookmarks from Chrome to Safari

For those moving from Chrome® to Safari, the process is nearly the same, with a few Chrome-specific steps.

  1. Export bookmarks from Chrome. Open Chrome, and go to Bookmarks > Bookmark manager. Click the three dots in the top-right corner, select Export bookmarks, then save the HTML file to your computer.
  2. Import to Safari. Follow the steps in the From other browsers to Safari section to import the HTML file.
