How to turn off SafeSearch on your phone

Google SafeSearch™ is a feature that blocks explicit content from appearing in internet search results. When enabled, content that contains graphic images or videos won't show on your iPhone® or Android™ smartphone. However, you might want to turn off SafeSearch if it prevents you from accessing online resources you need, such as news websites.

Asurion Experts help you get the most out of your tech. Whether you're wondering how to turn on Google Assistant or need guidance on setting up a new iPhone, we're here with answers. Here's how to turn off SafeSearch on iPhone and Android smartphones.

Turn off SafeSearch in the Google app

You can turn off SafeSearch directly from the Googleâ„¢ app:

  1. Open the Google app.
  2. Tap your Profile Picture or Initial.
  3. Tap Settings > SafeSearch.
  4. Tap Off. If a Lock icon appears, the SafeSearch setting is locked and can't be disabled.

What causes locked SafeSearch settings?

If you can’t turn off SafeSearch, it’s likely due to restrictions tied to your device, browser, account, or network—here are the most common reasons why.

  • Your account is managed. A parent, school, or workplace can force SafeSearch on. Contact the admin.
  • The network enforces it. Public Wi-Fi or workplace networks may force SafeSearch. Try switching to mobile data.
  • Security software turns it on. Antivirus or parental tools may enforce SafeSearch. Check settings or contact your IT admin.

Turn off SafeSearch in a mobile browser

You can also disable SafeSearch in a mobile browser like Safari® or Edge®:

  1. Open your preferred browser.
  2. Go to Google.com and log in.
  3. Tap your Profile Picture or Initial.
  4. Tap Settings > Safe Search.
  5. Tap Off.

Turn off SafeSearch on your Android smartphone

Google search is built into Android. To adjust SafeSearch:

  1. Open the Google app.
  2. Tap your Profile Picture or Initial.
  3. Tap Settings > SafeSearch.
  4. Tap Off.

Turn off SafeSearch through iPhone settings

By default, Safari uses Google search. You can also adjust SafeSearch via iPhone settings:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Screen Time.
  3. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  4. Tap App Store, Media, Web, & Games > Web Content.
  5. Tap Unrestricted.

If a parent or admin controls Screen Time, you’ll need their approval.

Implications of disabling SafeSearch

Turning off SafeSearch can open access to more content, but it also removes filters that help block explicit or inappropriate results—especially important if the device is shared with kids or managed through parental controls. Here's what you should know:

  • What changes. Results may now include explicit or graphic text, images, and videos.
  • When to keep it on. If you share your phone—especially with kids—leave SafeSearch enabled.
  • Extra protection. Both iPhone and Android include built-in parental controls for added safety.

FAQ

Can I turn off SafeSearch for only one device?

Yes. Changes in the Google app or browser affect your account across devices, but iPhone Screen Time changes only apply to that device.

Why is my SafeSearch locked?

It may be enforced by your network, account, or parental controls.

Will disabling SafeSearch affect other apps?

No. SafeSearch only applies to Google Search, not third-party apps or browsers that don’t use Google.
