How to set up Xbox Series X with external speakers

Your Xbox Series X™ delivers some seriously impressive visuals—but to really elevate your gaming experience, you need great sound. Whether you're using a soundbar, surround sound system, or Bluetooth® speakers, getting your audio setup right makes a big difference.

At Asurion, we help people get more from their gaming gear every day. If you want to connect external speakers to your console, here's everything you need to know.

Option 1: Connect through an HDMI audio device

If you're using a soundbar or AV receiver, HDMI is the best option for high-quality sound.

  1. Connect one end of an HDMI cable to your Xbox Series X.
  2. Plug the other end into your soundbar or AV receiver’s HDMI input.
  3. Use a second HDMI cable to connect your soundbar or receiver to your TV.

Once connected, your Xbox will route both audio and video through the soundbar or receiver.

Option 2: Connect via optical or 3.5mm (with workarounds)

The Xbox Series X does not have an optical or 3.5mm output, but you still have options.

  • Some TVs offer an optical audio out that can pass sound from the Xbox to a speaker system.
  • You can also use an HDMI audio extractor to split audio from the HDMI output.
  • If you're using a gaming headset, you can plug into the 3.5mm jack on the Xbox wireless controller.

Option 3: Use Bluetooth-compatible devices (indirectly)

The Xbox Series X doesn't support Bluetooth audio natively, but there are workarounds.

  • Use a Bluetooth transmitter connected to your TV’s headphone or optical out.
  • Pair your Bluetooth speakers or headphones with the transmitter for wireless sound.

Adjust your Xbox audio settings

Once everything is connected, you’ll want to fine-tune your settings.

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller.
  2. Go to Profile & system > Settings > General > Volume & audio output.
  3. Under Speaker audio, choose HDMI audio or Optical audio, depending on your setup.
  4. Set the audio format to Bitstream out or Stereo uncompressed, based on what your sound system supports.

FAQ

Can I plug external speakers directly into my Xbox Series X?

Not directly. The console doesn’t have a dedicated audio out. You’ll need to route sound through your TV, a receiver, or an HDMI audio extractor.

Does Xbox Series X support Bluetooth speakers?

No. The Xbox Series X|S doesn’t support Bluetooth audio natively, but you can use an adapter or transmitter connected to your TV.

What audio settings should I use on Xbox Series X?

Go to Settings > General > Volume & audio output and select the format that works best with your sound system—either Stereo uncompressed or Bitstream out.

Why is there no sound from my speakers?

Double-check your cable connections and make sure your TV or receiver is set to the correct input. Also, verify your Xbox’s audio output is set to the right format.
