Alexa too loud or too quiet? How to turn off adaptive volume

Alexa too loud or too quiet, showing how to turn off adaptive volume and adjust sound settings

⚡ Fast fix

  • Turn adaptive volume off in the Alexa app—it solves most sudden loudness swings.
  • Try saying, “Alexa, turn off adaptive volume.”
  • Check for routines that may be changing volume automatically.

Alexa™ includes a feature that automatically adjusts the volume of its voice based on nearby ambient noise. When your room gets louder with conversation, music, or appliances running, Alexa increases its volume. When the environment quiets down, Alexa lowers its voice automatically.

While this sounds helpful, many users find it unpredictable. If Alexa keeps getting louder or quieter without warning, adaptive volume may be the cause.

Our experts help customers get the most from their smart home devices every day. Here’s how to turn off adaptive volume—and how to control volume manually instead.

Understand what adaptive volume does

Adaptive volume is designed to keep Alexa responses audible regardless of background noise. It:

  • Raises volume when ambient noise increases
  • Lowers volume when the room becomes quiet
  • Primarily affects voice responses and media playback

It does not typically change alarm or notification volume settings.

Adaptive volume is different from volume routines. Routines allow you to schedule volume changes at certain times of day, regardless of noise level.

Check whether adaptive volume is enabled

You may have adaptive volume enabled without realizing it. Here’s how to check:

  1. Open the Alexa app on your mobile device.
  2. Select More.
  3. Go to Settings > Voice Responses.
  4. Turn off Adaptive Volume.

To confirm it’s off, create background noise and ask Alexa a question. If the volume doesn’t change automatically, the feature is disabled.

Not all devices support adaptive volume. Supported models include:

  • Echo Show™
  • Echo Show (2nd Generation)
  • Echo Show 5 (1st & 2nd Generation)
  • Echo Show 8 (1st & 2nd Generation)
  • Echo Show 10
  • Echo Spot™

If your device isn’t listed, you won’t see adaptive volume settings.

You can also disable it using voice control: “Alexa, turn off adaptive volume.”

Control volume without adaptive features

Even with adaptive volume off, you still have several ways to manage sound levels.

Use a voice command

Say: “Alexa, set the volume to 5.” Volume levels range from 1 (quietest) to 10 (loudest).

Use the Alexa app

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Select Menu.
  3. Go to Settings > Device Settings.
  4. Choose your Alexa device.
  5. Adjust the volume slider.

Set up a routine

To schedule volume changes:

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Select More > Routines > +.
  3. Under When this happens, choose a trigger such as Schedule.
  4. Under Add action, select Device Settings > Volume.
  5. Choose the volume level.

If Alexa is unresponsive or ignores volume settings, you may need to reset the device. A reset restores factory settings, and you’ll need to set up the device again from scratch.
