Why your Amazon Smart Plug keeps dropping offline—and how to fix it
⚡ Fast fix
- Check the outlet—If a wall switch cuts power, the plug will keep disappearing.
- Restart once—Unplug it for about 10 seconds, then reconnect.
- Look at the pattern—If several smart devices drop too, start with the router.

An Amazon® Smart Plug that works perfectly one minute and disappears from Alexa® the next isn’t making life particularly smart. And if it reconnects on its own later, figuring out what happened gets even trickier.
At Asurion, our experts know their way around the Wi-Fi, apps, and devices that keep home tech connected. If your Smart Plug keeps dropping offline, here’s how we’d track down what’s interrupting the connection and help it stay put.
First, make sure the plug isn't losing power
Before doing anything with Wi-Fi, check the outlet. Make sure the Smart Plug fits securely and, if the outlet is controlled by a wall switch, leave that switch on. Otherwise, someone flipping off the lights can take the Smart Plug offline right along with them.
Unplug the Smart Plug for about 10 seconds, reconnect it, and give it time to come back online. While it’s connected, press the physical button and make sure it can turn the lamp or other device on and off.
If the plug eventually stops responding altogether rather than simply dropping offline, our guide to fixing an Amazon Smart Plug that isn’t responding covers the broader power and control checks.
Next time it drops, look around
This is one of those problems that's easier to diagnose while it's actually happening. When the Smart Plug goes offline again, check another connected device nearby.
Several devices disappearing at roughly the same time makes the home network worth investigating. Restart the router and see whether the connection settles down before resetting individual devices.
If the Smart Plug is the only one having trouble, think about where it sits in relation to the router. Amazon Smart Plug uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, which has good range, but distance, thick walls, and interference can still weaken the signal. If possible, temporarily move the plug closer to the router and see whether it stays connected there.
You don't necessarily need to rearrange the house permanently. This is just a useful way to see whether Wi-Fi range is part of the problem.
Take a look at the Smart Plug in Alexa
Open the Alexa app and go to Devices > Plugs or All Devices, then select the Smart Plug.
If Alexa shows it offline but the physical button still controls whatever is plugged in, the Smart Plug has power—the connection to Alexa or Wi-Fi is what's gone missing.
While you're in the app, clean up any old or duplicate entries for the same plug. This can happen after resetting or setting up a Smart Plug more than once, and routines or voice commands may still be pointing at an old device entry.
Changed your Wi-Fi recently? Reconnect the plug
A new router, Wi-Fi name, or password is a pretty strong clue if the disconnecting started around the same time. The Smart Plug won't magically learn the new network credentials, so you'll need to reconnect it through Alexa.
Our guide to setting up an Amazon Smart Plug in the Alexa app walks through the connection process.
Once it's back online, test the plug for a while before rebuilding routines or changing other settings. If it stays connected, you're done.
Still dropping offline? Reset and reconnect it
By now, you've ruled out the outlet, given the plug a restart, watched the rest of the network, checked Alexa, and made sure the Wi-Fi credentials haven't changed. If the Smart Plug still repeatedly drops offline, resetting it gives the connection a clean start.
- Press and hold the button on the side of the Smart Plug for about 12 seconds.
- Release it when the LED turns red.
- Wait for the blue light to blink.
- Open the Alexa app and add the Smart Plug again.
- Reconnect it to Wi-Fi and test it before rebuilding any routines.
A reset erases the plug's current setup, which is why we'd keep it down here instead of using it as the opening move. If the freshly configured Smart Plug still can't stay connected while other devices nearby have no trouble, the plug itself starts looking a lot more suspicious.
