An Amazon® Smart Thermostat that's showing as offline can be frustrating, especially when you want to adjust the temperature without getting off the couch.

The good news is that "offline" doesn't always mean the thermostat itself has stopped working. Sometimes the thermostat is controlling your heating and cooling just fine—it just can't communicate with the Alexa app.

Is the thermostat actually offline?

Before opening the Alexa app, walk over to the thermostat.

If the display is lit and responding, that's actually a good sign. It usually means the thermostat has power, so we'd start thinking about Wi-Fi or app communication instead.

If the display is blank or flickering, shift your attention to power. Check:

• The HVAC system switch.
• The circuit breaker.
• Furnace or air handler power.
• Whether any HVAC work was recently performed.

If you're not comfortable working around thermostat wiring, don't start removing wires. At that point, it's safer to have the system checked professionally.

Restart your network

If the thermostat has power but still appears offline, the next thing we'd try is restarting the network.

Unplug your router for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and wait for Wi-Fi to return before checking the thermostat again.

Check the Alexa app

Now it's time to look at the app itself.

Open the Alexa app and make sure you're viewing the correct thermostat. We've seen duplicate devices, outdated room assignments, and old device names make it look like the thermostat disappeared when it's really just showing up somewhere unexpected.

Did anything change recently?

Offline thermostats usually have a story. Maybe you installed a new router. Changed the Wi-Fi password. Switched internet providers. Had a power outage.

If the thermostat was working before one of those changes, that's probably where we'd focus first. In many cases, reconnecting the thermostat to the updated Wi-Fi network is all that's needed.

Check the Wi-Fi signal

Thermostats are often installed wherever the old thermostat happened to be—not necessarily where your Wi-Fi signal is strongest.

If the thermostat sits behind thick walls, near metal ductwork, or far from the router, the connection may be unreliable. Try:

• Moving the router to a more central location.
• Adding a mesh point or Wi-Fi extender if needed.
• Checking whether nearby smart devices are also disconnecting.

Reset the thermostat only if you have to

A reset should be one of the last things you try.

If the thermostat is still controlling your heating and cooling normally from the wall but only appears offline in Alexa, resetting it probably won't solve the real problem. We usually save resets for situations where the thermostat can't reconnect after the network itself has been verified.

If you do decide to reset it, follow Amazon's model-specific instructions so you don't accidentally erase settings you didn't need to change.
