Amazon Smart Thermostat not following its schedule? Try these fixes
⚡ Fast fix
- Check the schedule switch—Make sure Use thermostat schedule is on.
- Manual change? It can hold only until the next scheduled change.
- Temperature changed unexpectedly? Check Routines or Alexa automatic controls that may be adjusting it.
- Still ignoring the schedule? Get 24/7 expert support for the tech you rely on.
The thermostat was supposed to warm up the house before everyone got out of bed. Instead, you're making coffee in a sweatshirt and wondering what happened to the schedule you know you set.
Before rewriting the whole thing, take a closer look at what Alexa® thinks should be happening. At Asurion, our experts know their way around the settings and automations that keep home tech running on cue. Here’s how to get an Amazon® Smart Thermostat back on track.
Start with the schedule in Alexa
Open the Alexa app and check that the schedule is still turned on before changing any temperatures.
- Select Thermostat.
- Choose the Amazon Smart Thermostat.
- Open Device Settings > Thermostat Schedule.
- Make sure Use thermostat schedule is turned on.
- Review the times and temperatures for each daily event.
- Save any changes.
Pay close attention to Home, Away, and Sleep times, AM versus PM, and days that don't match the rest of the week. One 7 p.m. that was supposed to be 7 a.m. can make the thermostat look much more rebellious than it actually is.
If several days should follow the same schedule, use the copy option instead of rebuilding each one individually.
A temperature change may only be temporary
Here's one behavior that's easy to mistake for a schedule problem: someone manually turns the heat up, everything feels fine for a while, and then the thermostat changes the temperature again on its own.
When a schedule is active, that manual adjustment can act as a temporary hold. It stays in place until the next scheduled event, then the thermostat goes back to following its programming.
So if the heat gets bumped up at 7 p.m. but Sleep is scheduled for 10 p.m., a temperature change at 10 isn't Alexa ignoring you. In that case, it's following orders a little too well.
Check Alexa Routines when the timing doesn't add up
The thermostat schedule isn't the only thing in Alexa that can change the temperature. Routines can control it too.
Open More > Routines and look for anything that includes the thermostat. This is especially worth doing when the temperature changes at roughly the same time every day but that time appears nowhere in Thermostat Schedule.
Don't start deleting routines at random. Disable the one you suspect, wait through the next scheduled change, and see what happens. If the mystery adjustment disappears, you've found the competing automation.
If Alexa changes aren't reaching the thermostat
At this point, try changing the temperature manually from the Alexa app and watch the thermostat.
If it responds, the connection is working and you can keep your attention on the schedule and automations. If the thermostat works from the wall but Alexa shows it offline—or app changes never reach it—the schedule can't do much until that connection is restored.
Our article on reconnecting an offline Amazon Smart Thermostat covers the Wi-Fi, router, and Alexa app checks for that situation.
While you're there, check for an Alexa app update too. Once the thermostat is back online, make one manual temperature change from the app before testing the schedule again.
Still off schedule? Give it a clean one to follow
When the thermostat is online, responds to Alexa, and has no competing routine but the schedule itself still behaves strangely, rebuilding it is less disruptive than resetting the thermostat.
Start with one day. Re-enter the Home, Away, and Sleep times and temperatures, make sure Use thermostat schedule is on, then wait for the next change to happen naturally. If that day works, copy it to the other days that should match.
We'd stop there before reaching for a factory reset. A thermostat that heats and cools normally, stays connected, and responds to commands doesn't need its entire setup wiped because one schedule got tangled.

FAQ
Why isn’t my Amazon Smart Thermostat following its schedule?
Make sure Use thermostat schedule is turned on, then check the event times, manual holds, Alexa Routines, and whether the thermostat is online.
Does manually changing the temperature cancel the schedule?
Nope. A manual change creates a temporary hold that lasts until the next scheduled change point.
Why does my thermostat temperature change on its own?
It may be reaching the next Home, Away, or Sleep event, or an Alexa Routine or automatic control may be adjusting it.
How do I turn the Amazon Smart Thermostat schedule back on?
Open the thermostat in the Alexa app, go to Device Settings > Thermostat Schedule, and turn on Use thermostat schedule.
Should I reset my Amazon Smart Thermostat if the schedule isn’t working?
Not first. If the thermostat is online and responds to manual commands, fix or rebuild the schedule before resetting the device.
