When is the best time of year to buy appliances?

If you miss a big sale, don’t get discouraged. There isn’t a best time to buy; instead, they have multiple dates to look out for to get the greatest discounts.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day very often has sales on big-ticket items like furniture and household appliances. The holiday also coincides with Maytag Month, an annual rebate promotion from Maytag that happens in May. If you’re looking for a great time to buy a washer and dryer, this is it. You’ll likely see the discounts in the form of price drops and rebates.

Independence Day

For this holiday, stores often encourage the purchase of multiple appliances. For example, to claim a deal, you might have to buy two or more items. If you’re too busy to shop sales the day of–July 4– Independence Day sales typically run for a few days, with some sales running into August.

Amazon Prime Days

If online shopping is your thing, Amazon Prime® Day is worth adding to your calendar to find deals on appliances. These two-day events—which usually occur in July and October—include discounts for just about everything on the site (anywhere from 30-60% off), including appliances. To get these savings, you do have to be a member of the Amazon Prime subscription service.

Labor Day

Labor Day sales are the typical “end of summer” sales. Stores will mark down most of their inventory, like mattresses, patio furniture, and appliances—basically anything that you put outside or requires more than one person to move. You might not get the biggest discount, but stores tend to throw in free delivery as a bonus.

Back-to-school deals

When college students make their way to campus, they’ll need all sorts of things—including ‌‌small appliances. So there are bound to be good markdowns on mini-fridges, air fryers, coffeemakers, and more.

Veterans Day

For Veteran’s Day in November, stores roll out limited-time discounts. You could see an increase in savings for people who are current or former members of the military. This sale is usually overshadowed by the other big sale days in November, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t great deals on appliances.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday is the following Monday. If you’ve been shopping around for new appliances, you technically get two days to find the best deal. These two dates serve almost as an “everything must go” sale and offer up some of the biggest price cuts, with discounts coming in at or above 40-35% off.

After a new appliance release

You’ve probably noticed that the best time of year to buy new appliances is in the fall and early winter (from September through December). Why? Because this is when manufacturers start to roll out new models start before the holiday season. Manufacturers will be in a hurry to get rid of some of their older merchandise.

Helpful tips for shopping for new appliances

Now that you know the best times to shop for new appliances, here are a few tips.

Compare prices

The best bit of shopping advice is simple: Never do your shopping on the day of a sales event. Take time beforehand to compare prices at different stores and see the appliances in person. The store will be less busy and you can ask an employee which models will be on sale to get an idea of your options.

Ask about floor models

You can get top-of-the-line appliances at a good price without having to go over your budget by asking about floor models, which are the appliances you see on the sales floor. They’re typically just as good as the ones in the back and usually are already discounted while still being subject to sales prices. To improve your options, you’ll want to check them out before a new appliance is released.
