Blink camera won’t update? Here’s what actually helps
⚡ Fast fix
- Check the version first—The camera may already be on the firmware intended for that model.
- Keep it online—Blink firmware updates depend on a working device connection.
- Update the app too—Camera firmware and the Blink app are separate pieces of the puzzle.

You see a newer Blink™ firmware version mentioned somewhere, check your Blink camera, and discover yours hasn’t changed. Naturally, the next thought is: Where’s the Update now button?
There usually isn’t one for the camera itself. Asurion Experts help customers untangle smart home software issues all the time, and Blink firmware is mostly designed to update in the background rather than through a manual install button.
Blink firmware updates are generally automatic
Blink’s current device settings show the camera’s firmware version and note that firmware may update automatically at certain intervals. Blink also publishes release notes by device model, which matters because different cameras and Sync Modules don’t all use the same version number.
So before troubleshooting, make sure you’re comparing your camera with the release notes for that exact model—not a different Blink camera that happens to live in the same app.
Check the firmware version on the camera
In the Blink app:
- Tap More on the camera thumbnail.
- Choose Device Settings.
- Open General Settings.
- Find Firmware.
You can also use Pull to Refresh under the device’s status information to update what the app is showing. If the camera is working normally and its model isn’t listed for the version you were expecting, there may be nothing to fix.
An offline camera can’t make much progress
If the camera has been dropping offline, fix that before worrying about firmware.
Check Network Strength and, for cameras that use one, Connection to Sync Module under the device settings. A camera that can’t hold a stable path back to Blink’s service isn’t in a good position to receive background software updates.
Our guide to fixing a Blink camera that won’t connect to Wi-Fi can help if connectivity is the bigger problem.
Update the Blink app separately
The Blink app and camera firmware aren’t the same thing. An outdated app can leave settings or device information looking different from Blink’s current support instructions even when the camera itself is fine.
Check the phone’s app store for a Blink update, install it if one is available, then reopen the app and check General Settings again.
Don’t compare firmware across different Blink models
Blink’s release notes list versions by device. A Sync Module, Outdoor camera, Mini, Video Doorbell, and Wired Floodlight Camera can all be current while showing completely different firmware numbers.
That’s why “my friend has a higher version” isn’t very useful unless both devices are the exact same model.
Blink’s release notes are the better reference when you want to see whether a recent version exists for a specific camera.
If the camera is also malfunctioning
Firmware becomes more interesting when the camera is doing something wrong—not just displaying a version number you weren’t expecting.
If Live View won’t open, motion is missing, or the camera keeps going offline, troubleshoot that symptom directly rather than factory resetting the camera in hopes of forcing an update. Our guide to fixing a Blink camera that isn’t working can help narrow down power, connection, Sync Module, and app problems.
A factory reset adds setup work and doesn’t turn into a manual firmware-download button, so it shouldn’t be the first move for a camera that otherwise works normally.

FAQ
Can I force a Blink camera firmware update?
Blink does not provide a normal user-facing camera firmware update button in its current device settings. Firmware may update automatically while the device is connected.
How do I check my Blink firmware version?
Open More > Device Settings > General Settings for the camera and look for Firmware.
Does Blink update camera firmware automatically?
Yes. Blink’s current settings documentation says firmware may be automatically updated at certain intervals.
Why does another Blink camera have a different firmware version?
Different Blink models use different firmware versions. Compare the camera only with release information for the same model.
Should I reset Blink because the firmware looks old?
Not just for the version number. First confirm the correct version for the model and make sure the camera, app, Wi-Fi, and Sync Module are working normally.
