How to change your PSN name

Woman changing PSN name

There comes a time in every gamer's life when their PSN® profile name might no longer reflect their current gaming persona. Whether it's a shift in gaming style, a new favorite character, or just outgrowing a username that seemed cool years ago, updating your PlayStation® username can be a refreshing change.

At Asurion, our experts have the tech know-how to help with any problem—including updating your PlayStation profile. Here’s our guide to changing your PSN name.

Why change your PSN name?

Updating your PlayStation® Network name can reflect your current gaming interests or a new personal brand. Some games, like Fortnite, tie their in-game player profiles to your current PSN username so changing your name there also means changing your PSN name.

Before you change your PSN name

Before you update your profile name, there are some things you need to know. You can change your PSN name as often as you’d like, though it can come with a cost ($5 for PlayStation Plus subscribers and $10 for non-subscribers). The first name change is free, and every subsequent change is an additional fee depending on your PlayStation® Plus subscriber status.

Don’t like your new name? You can change your name back to your old one for free.

There are some potential in-game consequences of changing your PSN name. It might affect access to content, game currency, game progress, and leaderboards in certain older games. In particular, PlayStation®3 and PlayStation® Vita games and apps don’t support this feature.
