New router? Changed your Wi-Fi password? Maybe you finally retired the network name your internet provider gave you six years ago. Whatever the reason, your Echo Dot may need a little help finding its way back online.
At Asurion, we help people sort out smart home connection issues every day, and changing the Wi-Fi on an Echo Dot® is usually pretty painless. Here’s how to connect it to the new network—and what to check if Alexa refuses to cooperate.
How to change the Wi-Fi on your Echo Dot
You’ll make the change through the Amazon Alexa app on your phone. Before you start, make sure your phone is connected to the Wi-Fi network you want your Echo Dot to use.
Then:
- Open the Amazon Alexa app.
- Tap Devices.
- Select your Echo Dot.
- Open Device Settings.
- Find the Wi-Fi or network setting and choose the option to change it.
- Follow the prompts to connect your Echo Dot to the new Wi-Fi network.
Alexa may take a minute to reconnect. Once she responds normally again, you’re back in business.
If your Echo Dot doesn’t show the new Wi-Fi network
First, make sure the network is actually available on your phone. If your phone can’t see it either, the Echo Dot probably isn’t the problem.
If the network appears on your phone but not during Echo setup, move the Echo Dot a little closer to the router and try again. Smart speakers don’t need to live next to the router forever, but during setup, a stronger signal removes one possible troublemaker from the equation.
It’s also worth double-checking the network name. If your router broadcasts several networks—maybe a main network, guest network, and separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz options—it’s easy to tap the wrong one.
Put your Echo Dot back into setup mode
If the Alexa app can find your Echo Dot but can’t get it onto the new network, setup mode is usually the next move.
Press and hold the Action button on your Echo Dot until the light turns orange. The exact timing can vary by model, so give it a few seconds. Once you see orange, return to the Amazon Alexa app and follow the setup prompts again.
Check the Wi-Fi password
Enter the password again carefully, especially if it contains uppercase letters, numbers, or symbols that are easy to misread. If your phone automatically joined the network months ago, you may not have typed the password yourself in a while.
If other devices can connect using the same credentials but the Echo Dot still can’t, then it’s worth looking beyond the password.
Restart your Echo Dot and router
Sometimes both devices just need a clean start.
Unplug the Echo Dot for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in. You can also restart your router and give it a few minutes to get fully online before trying the Echo setup again.
Why restart both? Your router assigns network connections to the devices in your home, and a restart can clear a temporary connection problem without sending you into a maze of settings.

Changing internet providers? Check your other Alexa devices too
If you replaced your modem or router, changing the Wi-Fi on one Echo Dot doesn’t necessarily update every Alexa device in the house.
Check your other Echo speakers, smart displays, plugs, bulbs, and connected devices too. Anything still looking for the old network may need to be reconnected separately.
This is especially useful to remember if one Echo works perfectly while another suddenly seems offline. That usually points to a device-specific setup issue rather than a problem with the whole network.
Do you need to factory reset your Echo Dot?
Usually, no.
If the Echo Dot powers on, enters setup mode, and appears in the Alexa app, keep working through the Wi-Fi setup first. A factory reset wipes the device setup and makes you start over, so it’s better saved for cases where the Echo Dot still won’t complete setup after the simpler fixes.

FAQ
Can I change my Echo Dot Wi-Fi without resetting it?
Yes. In most cases, you can change the network through the Amazon Alexa app without factory resetting your Echo Dot.
Why won’t my Echo Dot connect to my new Wi-Fi?
Start by checking the network name and password, then move the Echo Dot closer to your router and put it into setup mode. Restarting the Echo and router can also clear temporary connection issues.
Why is my Echo Dot showing an orange light?
An orange light usually means the Echo Dot is in setup mode and ready to connect to Wi-Fi.
Do I have to reconnect Alexa after changing my Wi-Fi password?
Yes. If you change the Wi-Fi password, your Echo Dot still has the old credentials saved and needs the new password before it can reconnect.
Will changing Wi-Fi on one Echo Dot update all my Echo devices?
Not necessarily. Other Echo and smart home devices may need to be reconnected to the new network individually.
