How to check your HP laptop battery health

💡 Need to know

  • Start with HP’s own test—Battery Check can tell healthy wear from a battery that needs attention.
  • Windows adds context—A battery report compares what the battery holds now with what it held when new.
  • Runtime isn’t the whole story—Brightness, apps, and performance settings can drain a healthy battery faster.
  • Swelling changes the plan—Stop using the laptop if the case or trackpad is starting to bulge.

Your HP® laptop used to last most of the afternoon. Now you're hunting for an outlet before lunch, even though Windows insists the battery is fully charged. Something's not adding up.

At Asurion, we've helped people figure out whether a laptop battery is simply showing its age or there's another problem draining the power. Here's how we'd check your HP laptop's battery health, what the results mean, and when it's worth considering a replacement.

How to check your HP laptop battery health

There are a few ways to check battery health on an HP laptop, but we'd start with HP Battery Check. It's the quickest way to find out whether the battery is still in good shape.

1. Run HP Battery Check with HP Support Assistant

If your laptop starts normally, you can check the battery without restarting into a separate diagnostic tool.

  1. Open HP Support Assistant.
  2. Find Battery Check under the available diagnostic tools.
  3. Run the test and review the results.

If HP Support Assistant isn't installed, you can download it from HP's official website.

2. Check battery health with HP Hardware Diagnostics

If Windows won't start or you want another way to test the battery, use HP's built-in diagnostics.

  1. Connect your laptop to its charger.
  2. Restart it and immediately press Esc repeatedly.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  4. Select Component Tests > Power > Battery, if available.
  5. Run the test and review the results.

You may see Passed, Weak, Replace, or Failure, depending on your HP model.

Our guide to running HP hardware diagnostics explains how to use the tool and understand its results.

3. Generate a Windows battery health report

Want to see how much capacity your battery has lost? Windows 11 can generate a report comparing what the battery could hold when it was new with what it can hold today.

  1. Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin).
  2. Enter powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter.
  3. Open the HTML file saved at the location shown.
  4. Find Design Capacity and Full Charge Capacity under Installed batteries.

For example, if your battery originally held 50,000 mWh but now holds 35,000 mWh, it's down to about 70% of its original capacity.

That doesn't automatically mean it needs replacing. We'd also consider how long the laptop lasts and whether HP Battery Check reports a problem.

What do your HP battery health results mean?

Battery health naturally declines over time, but not every warning means it's time for a replacement.

  • Passed: No battery problem detected.
  • Weak: Battery capacity has declined.
  • Replace: HP recommends replacing the battery.
  • Failure: A battery problem was detected.
  • Calibrate: The battery reading may need adjusting.

If HP recommends calibration, our guide to calibrating an HP laptop battery explains when and how to do it.

When should you replace your HP laptop battery?

A battery that doesn't last as long as it used to isn't necessarily ready for replacement. But if your laptop shuts down unexpectedly, barely holds a charge, or fails HP Battery Check, we'd take a closer look.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.

FAQ

How do I check my HP laptop battery health in Windows 11?

Open Terminal as an administrator, enter powercfg /batteryreport, and open the generated report. Compare Full Charge Capacity with Design Capacity to see how much capacity remains.

What is a good battery health percentage for an HP laptop?

A battery closer to 100% of its original capacity generally has less wear. Around 80% or below may be a reason to consider replacement, especially if battery life has become noticeably shorter.

How do I know if my HP laptop battery is bad?

Unexpected shutdowns, very short battery life, or a Replace or Failure result from HP Battery Check can indicate a battery problem.

Can I improve my HP laptop battery health?

You can reduce further wear by avoiding excessive heat and using supported battery-care settings. But lost battery capacity can't be restored through software or calibration.
