When you’re trying to use your Chromebook® and your keys stop working all of a sudden, it’s nearly impossible to get anything done. But don’t worry. Fixing Chromebook keys that are not working often only takes a few quick steps.
At Asurion, we help you fix, protect, and get the most out of your devices like Chromebooks. Follow this guide to get your Chromebook keys working again so you can go back to using your computer without any trouble.
Identify whether the issue is software or hardware
Sometimes, when HP Chromebook keys aren't working, the issue is with the specific app you’re using, not your computer. Test this by opening another app to see whether the keys work there. If so, try quitting and restarting the app with the issue.
If the keys are not working on your Chromebook across apps, the next step is to reboot your computer. Also make sure sticky keys are off:
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Manage Accessibility Features.
- Under Keyboard and text input, toggle off the sticky keys option.
If the problem persists, use chrome://diagnostics to see if the keys register at all. You can access this with an onscreen keyboard by going to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and text input. Then toggle on the On-screen keyboard. Tap on the keys on the screen to type while your regular keyboard keys are not working.
Once you pull up chrome://diagnostics with the onscreen keyboard, click the Keyboard section and press on your keys. If they don’t light up on screen, that means there’s probably a physical hardware issue with the keyboard. You can always try plugging in and using an external keyboard to confirm that the issue is that the built-in one has failed.
Look for debris stuck in your keys, which could prevent your keystrokes from registering properly. Use compressed air to remove any dirt and debris. Evidence of physical damage or spills is also a big sign that the issue is with the keyboard itself.

Reset and update your Chromebook
Fixing the issue when Lenovo Chromebook keys are not working may be as simple as restarting your computer. Try signing out and back into your account to clear profile-level glitches. Other Chromebook tips and tricks include signing in as a guest in case the keyboard issue is caused by a software extension.
Check for any ChromeOS updates that fix keyboard bugs, and install them if available.
Complete a hard reset by following these steps:
- Turn off the Chromebook.
- Press and hold the Refresh key (which looks like an incomplete circle with an arrow) and the Power button.
- Release the Refresh key when the computer restarts.
If the keyboard has a hardware issue, you probably won’t be able to complete the hard reset, because it requires pressing keys. However, if the cause of the problem is something else, the hard reset may help. Hard resets may also fix a frozen Chromebook.
For more persistent issues with the keyboard, you can try a Powerwash: a factory reset for a Chromebook. Follow these steps:
- Back up your Chromebook, as the Powerwash will clear your data and restore the computer to its factory settings.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Advanced > Reset > Powerwash.
- Confirm that you want to reset your Chromebook entirely.
Only use a Powerwash as a last resort. It may help resolve the keyboard issue, but you will need to set up your computer from scratch.
