How to use your Apple Watch to monitor your heart rate during a Peloton workout

During a Peloton® workout, your Apple Watch® offers a simple, convenient way to monitor your heart rate—whether you're crushing your core with some strength training, hopping on the bike for a hip-hop ride, or taking to the treadmill for an endurance run. We'll show you how to get started.

At Asurion, we not only fix and protect the tech you love, we also teach you how to get the most out of it. Here's how to connect your Apple Watch to track your heart rate with Peloton.

Why track your heart rate during workouts?

Monitoring your heart rate can help you tailor your workout to meet your fitness goals—from losing weight to improving your cardiovascular health. It also helps make sure you're not overdoing it, which can be dangerous, especially if you have a heart condition.

How to set up your Apple Watch to track your heart rate on Peloton

If you want to use your Apple Watch to monitor your heart rate during a Peloton workout, you can do so one of two ways: using the Peloton app or any Peloton bike or treadmill.

Both require you to have a Peloton all access membership and the following:

  • An iPhone® or iPad® running iOS® 14 or later
  • An Apple Watch running watchOS® 7 or later
  • The latest iOS version of the Peloton app

Next, follow these simple steps to connect your Apple Watch heart rate monitor to your Peloton bike, treadmill, or app:

Download the Peloton app on your iPhone and Apple Watch

  1. If you haven't done so already, pair your phone and your watch. If you need help, check out our guide on how to connect your iPhone to your Apple Watch.
  2. Download the Peloton app on your iPhone through the App Store®.
  3. Open the Peloton app, and tap More at the bottom-right of the screen.
  4. Tap Apple Watch > Set Up > Install.
  5. If you haven't turned on automatic installation, select the Peloton Apple Watch app from the list of apps.

Give the Peloton app access to your Health app data to track your workout

  1. Open the Peloton app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap More > Apple Watch > Set Up > Connect to Health app.
  3. Tap Turn on All to allow the Peloton app to access your health data and read your heart rate.
  4. Make sure you've turned on Track your Movement and Motion and Fitness to sync the data from your workouts.
  5. Tap Done.

Allow Peloton notifications on your Apple Watch

  1. Open the Peloton app on your Apple Watch.
  2. Tap Allow Notifications for reminders like when to select End Workout when you've finished a class.

Start your workout

To get started on your Peloton bike or treadmill, wave your Apple Watch in front of the camera on your device, or tap connect on your watch once you start moving.

If you're working out without the Bike or Tread, just tap connect on your watch. It's that simple. Once you've set up the apps for your Peloton and Apple Watch, you can start a class anytime from your iPhone, Peloton Bike, or Peloton Tread.

What to do if your Apple Watch won't connect to Peloton

If your Peloton won't connect to your Apple Watch to show your heart rate , here are a few things to try :

  1. Check your watch. Make sure it's wrapped tightly around your wrist.
  2. Check your iPhone. Make sure it's close enough to your Apple Watch—try placing it within a foot—to make sure they're synced.
  3. Check your Bluetooth. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy & Security and make sure Bluetooth® is turned on.
  4. Check your Wi-Fi. From your Home screen, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and make sure your Wi-Fi is on and connected to a network.
  5. Check your user profile. On your iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] and scroll down to see which devices are signed in to your account. Make sure you're using the same user profile on your iPhone and Apple Watch.
  6. Check your Peloton app. Tap your watch to see whether the icon for the Peloton app appears. If it doesn't, follow the instructions we mentioned earlier to download the app on your iPhone and then check again to make sure it syncs with your Apple Watch.
  7. Check your Health App. Open the Apple Health app on your iPhone. Go to Summary > Apps > Peloton. Under Allow Peloton to Write, give the app permission for all options (Active Energy, Cycling Distance, Heart Rate, etc.).
