How to connect your Xbox controller to your phone or tablet

Connecting Xbox controller to phone

Are you going on vacation and want to bring your game? Skip the TSA trouble by leaving your console at home and connect to a different device, like your phone or tablet, instead.

At Asurion, our experts have the know-how to help with most tech—including your Xbox®. Whether you're a seasoned gamer or new to gaming, this guide will help you navigate the process of connecting your Xbox controller to a phone or a tablet.

Why connect your Xbox controller to your phone or tablet?

You can’t bring your console everywhere. Connecting your controller to your phone or tablet gives you a greater range of where you can take your mobile gaming—even places like a road trip or plane ride. Here’s what you need before you start:

  • An Xbox wireless controller (with Bluetooth™ capability).
  • A compatible smartphone or tablet (Android™ or iOS®).
  • The latest OS update installed on your phone or tablet.

Connecting your Xbox controller to your device

Mobile device screens are getting bigger and better. With increased tech specs to keep up with most games, why not try gaming on a phone or an iPad?

How to connect an Xbox controller to an Android device

  1. Make sure your Android phone’s Bluetooth is on. Go to Settings > Connections > Bluetooth and switch it on.
  2. Press and hold the Xbox button on your controller until it lights up. Then, hold the pairing button (located between the left and right bumpers on the front of the controller) until the Xbox button flashes.
  3. On your phone, select Pair New Device and choose your Xbox controller from the list of nearby devices.

How to connect an Xbox controller to an iPhone or iPad

  1. Make sure your Apple device’s Bluetooth is on. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and switch it on.
  2. Press and hold the Xbox button on your controller until it lights up. Then, hold the pairing button (located between the left and right bumpers on the front of the controller) until the Xbox button flashes.
  3. On your iPhone or iPad, your Xbox controller will appear under “Other Devices” in Bluetooth settings. Tap it to connect.

Troubleshooting common connection issues

  • Ensure your controller is charged. A low battery can cause connection problems.
  • Restart your devices. Sometimes, a quick restart of your phone and controller can resolve connection issues.
  • Forget the device and try to re-pair them. If initially unsuccessful, forget the device in your phone's Bluetooth settings and try pairing again.
  • Check for interferences. Ensure there are no physical or signal interferences between your controller and phone.
  • Update your devices. Make sure both your phone and Xbox controller have the latest updates.
