Echo Show screen frozen? Here's how to fix it
⚡ Fast fix
- Unplug it first. A power restart clears many frozen-screen issues.
- Check the outlet. Loose power can make the screen act stuck.
- Give updates time. Interrupting one can make things worse.
- Reset last. Factory reset only after easier fixes fail.
- Don't stay stuck. Get 24/7 expert support for the tech you rely on.
A frozen Echo Show™ is especially annoying because the whole point of the screen is that you can tap it, glance at it, and move on. When the display gets stuck on a logo, a clock, a recipe, or a blank screen, it can feel like the device has given up.
Asurion Experts troubleshoot smart home tech all the time, and with stuck screens, we usually start by separating a true freeze from a power, Wi-Fi, or update delay. Here’s how to fix an Echo Show that’s frozen without wiping your setup—unless you really need to.
Why is my Echo Show frozen?
An Echo Show can freeze because of a temporary software glitch, weak power connection, interrupted update, overloaded app or skill, Wi-Fi issue, or hardware problem. Sometimes the screen is frozen but Alexa® still responds; other times the whole device stops reacting.
That difference matters. If Alexa still answers, the display or interface may be stuck. If Alexa doesn’t respond and the touchscreen doesn’t work, start with power.
For voice response issues, Asurion’s guide to fixing Alexa when it’s not responding is a helpful next step.
Restart your Echo Show
Start with a simple restart. It won’t erase your settings, and it clears many temporary glitches.
- Unplug the Echo Show from the power outlet.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Plug it directly into a working wall outlet.
- Wait for the Amazon® logo and home screen to load.
- Test the touchscreen and voice controls.
Avoid plugging it into a loose power strip while troubleshooting. A weak or unstable power connection can make the device restart, freeze, or act like it’s stuck.

Check whether the screen or Alexa is frozen
Once the Echo Show restarts, test both parts of the device.
Say, “Alexa, what time is it?” If Alexa answers but the screen still won’t move, the display may be stuck. If Alexa doesn’t answer either, the device may still be booting, disconnected, or not getting stable power.
If the screen is responsive but a specific feature is stuck, close that feature and try something else. For example, if a skill freezes, the problem may be the skill rather than the Echo Show. Asurion’s guide to fixing Alexa skills that aren’t working can help if the issue keeps happening with one service.
Check your Wi-Fi connection
A weak connection can make an Echo Show look frozen when it’s really waiting for content to load. That’s common with video, smart home dashboards, recipes, and streaming features.
Move the Echo Show closer to your router and restart it again. If other devices are also slow, restart the router. If your Echo Show was recently moved, the new spot may be too far from the router or blocked by walls, appliances, or furniture.
For setup help, see Asurion’s guide to connecting an Echo Dot to Wi-Fi. The device is different, but the Wi-Fi troubleshooting logic is similar across Echo devices.
Let software updates finish
Echo devices often update automatically, and during an update the screen may look stuck longer than expected. If you see a progress screen, spinning icon, or the device recently restarted on its own, give it time before unplugging it again.
Once it’s working, check for updates. Asurion’s guide to updating Alexa software explains how to confirm the device is current.
Free up the Echo Show by disabling problem features
If the Echo Show freezes when a certain skill, routine, or connected device runs, focus there. Disable and re-enable the skill, unlink and relink the service, or simplify the routine to see whether one step is causing the hang.
This is especially helpful when the Echo Show works normally until you ask for a specific command. A device-wide reset may not help if the real issue is a broken skill connection.
Factory reset the Echo Show if nothing else works
If the Echo Show keeps freezing after restarts, Wi-Fi checks, and software updates, a factory reset may help. Just know that it removes device setup and account registration, so you’ll need to set it up again.
To reset from the screen, swipe down and tap Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults. If the screen won’t work, your model may support a button reset using the physical controls.
Use the full reset if you’re selling or giving away the device. If your model offers an option to retain smart home device connections and you’re only troubleshooting, that option may save setup time.

FAQ
Why is my Echo Show stuck?
It may be frozen because of a software glitch, weak power, Wi-Fi trouble, a stalled update, or a misbehaving skill. Start with the classic tech move: unplug it, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in.
How do I unfreeze an Echo Show?
Unplug it, wait about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and let it restart fully. Simple, but surprisingly effective—like stretching for smart speakers.
Will restarting my Echo Show erase anything?
No. Restarting just turns it off and back on. Factory resetting is the one that wipes setup and makes you start over.
Why is my Echo Show stuck on the Amazon logo?
It may be booting slowly, updating, or dealing with a power or software issue. Give it a little time, then restart it from a stable wall outlet if it stays stuck.
When should I factory reset a frozen Echo Show?
Use factory reset after restart, power, Wi-Fi, and update checks fail. It can help stubborn issues, but it also means setup déjà vu.
