How to stop an eero that keeps restarting
⚡ Fast fix
- One restart after an update? That can be normal.
- Watch the status light—Yellow or orange points toward a power-supply problem.
- Check the outlet and adapter—Repeated power interruptions can look like software trouble.
- Still stuck in a reboot loop? Get 24/7 expert support for the tech you rely on.
A router reboot once in a while is normal. An eero® that keeps doing it on its own feels less like a refresh and more like it’s stuck in a loop.
Asurion Experts help customers troubleshoot home networks every day. The restart pattern itself can tell you whether you’re seeing a normal software update, a power problem, or a connection that can’t stay settled.
A single reboot after an update can be normal
eero software updates automatically, and the network reboots as part of the installation. That reboot usually creates about 90 seconds of downtime near the end of an update, so one overnight restart isn’t automatically a problem.
Open the eero app and check Settings > Software updates. If an update just finished, use the network normally and see whether the restarting stops there.
If the eero reboots several times a day or keeps cycling through startup lights, though, keep going. That isn’t the normal end of one software update.
Watch what the light does
The LED gives you more useful information than the restart itself:
- Blinking white means the eero is booting or trying to connect.
- Yellow or orange points to a power-supply problem.
- Solid red means it’s offline.
- Blinking red means the eero is resetting.
If the light repeatedly disappears completely and then comes back, pay close attention to power. If it stays powered but keeps moving from blinking white to red, the internet or mesh connection deserves more attention.
Check the power before blaming firmware
Make sure the eero’s power adapter is firmly connected at the device and wall outlet. If it’s plugged into a power strip, extension cord, switched outlet, or crowded surge protector, test a normal wall outlet for a while.
Use the correct power adapter for the eero model. A yellow or orange status light is especially useful here because eero specifically uses that color to flag a power-supply problem.
Then leave the eero running long enough to see whether the reboot cycle returns. Swapping outlets and immediately changing three network settings at the same time makes it much harder to tell which fix mattered.
Restart it once on purpose
If power looks solid, give the eero one clean restart instead of repeatedly unplugging it every time it acts up.
For one eero, open the Home tab, select the eero, tap the more-options menu, then choose Restart. Or unplug it for about 30 seconds and reconnect power.
If the whole network is acting unstable, restart the modem and gateway too. Bring the modem fully online before restarting the gateway so the eero has a working internet connection waiting for it.
If Wi-Fi across the house keeps dropping between restarts, our article on why Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting can help check interference, placement, and broader network stability.
See whether the modem is disappearing too
If the gateway eero restarts around the same time the modem or ONT loses its connection, the eero may not be the beginning of the problem.
Watch the modem lights and test another wired or wireless device when the problem happens. If the modem is dropping service too, check the internet provider for an outage or connection problem before resetting the eero.
For a wireless mesh point, move that eero closer to another node and see whether the repeated reconnecting stops. A weak mesh path can leave a node cycling through connection attempts even though the gateway stays online.
Don’t hard reset a rebooting eero just to experiment
A hard reset clears user data and logs and removes the eero from the network. That’s a much bigger move than a restart, and it won’t repair an unstable outlet, wrong power adapter, internet outage, or weak mesh connection.
If the same eero continues rebooting with stable power, a healthy modem connection, current software, and a good mesh location, it’s time to get device-specific support rather than turning the reset button into a guessing game.

FAQ
Can an eero firmware update cause a restart?
Yes. eero automatically reboots during a software update, and brief downtime near the end of the update is expected.
Why does my eero keep blinking white?
Blinking white means the eero is booting or trying to connect. If it never reaches solid white, check power and the network connection.
What does a yellow or orange eero light mean?
It points to a power-supply problem. Check the adapter, cable, and outlet before changing network settings.
Is it normal for eero to restart every day?
No. An occasional restart during an update can be normal, but repeated daily rebooting deserves troubleshooting.
Should I factory reset an eero that keeps restarting?
Not as a first move. A hard reset removes the eero from the network and clears its data, while many reboot loops come from power or connection problems that a reset won’t fix.
