  • Use the app: Setup happens through the Eero app with Bluetooth on.
  • Stay close: Keep the extender within ~50 feet of another Eero.

Eero® mesh Wi-Fi systems are designed to ensure you get reliable, fast internet coverage anywhere in your home. If you’ve been frustrated with internet dead zones or slow load speeds on your home Wi-Fi, installing an Eero Wi-Fi extender can be the perfect solution. And it’s easier than you might think.

The tech experts at Asurion have helped millions of customers like you set up and get more out of their devices. Discover how to set up your new Wi-Fi extender in this guide.

Adding an extender to your Eero network

If you already have an Eero network in place, adding extra extenders is quick. Grab your smartphone with the Eero app installed and follow these steps:

  • Turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone.
  • Open the Eero app and go to the Home tab.
  • Select the Add icon, which looks like a plus symbol in a blue circle.
  • Choose either Add indoor Eero or Add outdoor Eero, depending on where you plan to place your new extender.
  • Place your Eero in the desired location.
  • Plug the Eero into a power source. You should see a blinking white LED on the device to show it’s receiving power.
  • Place your phone close to the Eero so the app can detect the device over Bluetooth. You may need to use your phone to scan the barcode on the Eero.
  • Once the app finds and connects to the Eero, you should see a solid blue LED on the device.
  • The app will test whether the placement is right. If the Eero gets a strong signal where you put it, you’ll see a message: “Nice! Placement looks great.” If you get a different message, consider moving the Eero.
  • Next, choose from a list of room names to describe where the Eero is. Or choose Custom location to enter your own room name.
  • Finish setup once the app adds the Eero to your network.

So, while it isn’t quite as simple as just plugging the Eero extender in and it working right away, the Eero 6 extender setup process is straightforward. And if you ever want to remove Eeros from your network, you can do that in the app with just a few more clicks.

Optimizing placement for the best signal

During the setup process for your first Eero, the app will offer some placement tips to help you get the best internet coverage in your home. Generally, follow these guidelines:

  • Place the Eeros in centralized locations in your home.
  • Keep each Eero no further than 50 feet apart from another—find the middle point between nodes.
  • Avoid placing the Eero near items that can cause interference, like metal furniture, mirrors, and microwaves.
  • Put your Eero on a stable, flat surface that’s out in the open.
  • Stay away from heat sources like incandescent lights and strong direct sunlight.
  • Don’t put the Eero on the ground—aim for halfway between the floor and the ceiling.

Before purchasing an Eero Wi-Fi extender, you should make sure the system is compatible with your internet service provider (ISP). Eero is compatible with most major ISPs, but your ISP may require specific settings or adjustments for you to use Eero with your existing service. For example, Eero generally works with Spectrum internet, but you may need to adjust some settings.

Troubleshooting common Eero setup issues

If your smartphone can’t find the Eero device during setup, there are a few things you can try to fix the issue:

  • Power cycle: Unplug your modem and Eero for 60 seconds. Plug the modem back in, wait for the lights to get back to normal, then plug the Eero in. Try the setup process again.
  • Bluetooth: Make sure Bluetooth is turned on in your smartphone settings. Try toggling it off and back on to reset it, then try the Eero connection again.
  • Placement: Put the new Eero closer to another Eero to strengthen the connection.

You can use an Eero extender with your existing router instead of replacing your router with an Eero Wi-Fi system. In that case, the easiest option is generally putting your Eeros in bridge mode. Just keep in mind that Eeros in bridge mode do not offer some of the advanced features you would get with a full Eero Wi-Fi system.
