How to extend your Kindle battery life
When you’re ready to start reading a new bestseller, you want your Kindle® to be up and running. But what if the battery is drained? We’ll explain how to prolong your Kindle battery with some easy tips.
At Asurion, we’ll help you care for all your favorite tech and troubleshoot issues like a Kindle that won’t charge or turn on. Here’s our guide on how to extend Kindle battery life.
Common causes of Kindle battery drain
Are you wondering, why is my Kindle battery draining so fast? Here are a few possible reasons:
- Your Kindle needs a software update.
- Your e-reader screen is too bright.
- An app or background app refresh is draining your Kindle battery.
- You’re staying connected to Wi-Fi for too long.
Tips to extend Kindle battery life
Here are our best tips for how to prolong your Kindle battery power:
Restart your device
Try turning your Kindle off, then on again. A simple restart may help your device run more efficiently and conserve your Kindle battery.
Use Kindle Power Saver mode
When you turn on Kindle Power Saver mode, your e-reader can stay in standby mode longer before recharging your battery. Your device may turn on slightly slower, but you’ll preserve your battery. Here’s what to do:
- Open your Kindle or Kindle Paperwhite by opening its case or pressing the Power button.
- Tap the three dots on the Home screen.
- Tap Settings > Device Options > Advanced Options.
- Next, tap Power Saver then tap Enable.
- Tap X to return to your Kindle Home screen.

Reduce your screen brightness
On your Kindle Home screen, swipe from top to bottom. When you see the brightness slider, slide it down to the lowest setting to prolong your Kindle battery.
Turn on Airplane mode
To give your Kindle a rest, pause your internet connection by putting your device into Airplane mode. Here’s how:
- Open Quick Settings (the gear icon on the toolbar at the top of the screen).
- Tap Airplane Mode.
Turn off Page Refresh
The Page Refresh feature makes the text on your screen switch smoothly from page to page, but it uses a lot of battery power.
To turn it off:
Open Settings > Reading Options > Page Refresh and tap the On/Off button to turn it off.
Put your Kindle to sleep
If you use your Kindle sleep mode settings, it won’t need power to light up your screen when you’re ready to read. Simply tap the Power button to put your e-reader in sleep mode.
Charge your Kindle
When you update the software, try plugging in your Kindle to recharge it. That should help the battery last longer.
If you’ve tried all these troubleshooting steps but your e-reader is still draining too fast or won’t charge at all, you probably need a Kindle battery replacement.
