Fire TV suddenly has no sound? Here’s what to do

There’s a particularly confusing moment when Fire TV™ is playing a show perfectly—except nobody is making a sound. Before digging through audio menus, make sure the silence follows everything you watch and not just one app or video.

See how much of Fire TV is actually silent
Start by playing something else. Switch shows, then open another app and listen for menu sounds or other audio along the way. If only one app or program is silent, leave the TV and soundbar settings alone for now. Force stop the problem app, reopen it, and check for an update.
When everything on Fire TV is silent, move on to the audio setup.
Check the TV and soundbar
This sounds obvious, but it’s worth ruling out before changing audio formats or resetting anything. Make sure the television isn’t muted and turn the volume up enough to confirm.
If you use a soundbar or receiver, temporarily switch back to the TV’s built-in speakers. What happens next tells you quite a bit:
- Sound comes back: Focus on the soundbar, receiver, cable, or its settings.
- Still silent: Keep troubleshooting the Fire TV or television.
- Sound cuts in and out: Check the connection between your devices.
Restart the whole setup
When everything was working yesterday and suddenly isn’t today, we’d restart the devices before assuming a setting changed.
Restart Fire TV from Settings > My Fire TV (or Device & Software) > Restart. Then restart the television and any soundbar or receiver connected to it.
Once everything is back on, play the same video again. Sometimes that’s all it takes to get the devices communicating properly again.
Check the Fire TV audio setting
If restarting didn’t bring the sound back, the audio format may not be playing nicely with the television or sound system. Open Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio > Surround Sound. If your current setting isn’t working, try Best Available first. You can also test PCM to see whether a simpler audio format restores sound.
If PCM works while another format doesn’t, you’ve narrowed the problem to audio-format compatibility rather than a failed speaker.
Check HDMI and other audio connections
A loose HDMI connection can give you a perfectly good picture while the audio misbehaves.
Disconnect and reconnect the Fire TV and any HDMI cables between the TV, soundbar, and receiver. If another HDMI port is available, try it while you’re testing. For now, bypass unnecessary splitters, switches, or adapters so you’re working with the simplest setup possible.

If Bluetooth audio disappeared
If the sound was supposed to be playing through Bluetooth headphones or a speaker, make sure Fire TV is still connected to the device you expect.
Open Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Other Bluetooth Devices and check the connection. If needed, disconnect the audio device and pair it again.
It’s also worth checking whether Fire TV connected itself to a previously paired Bluetooth device somewhere else in the room. The audio may not be missing at all—it may just be playing somewhere you weren’t listening.
Check for Fire TV updates
By this point, you’ve ruled out the stream, speakers, basic settings, and physical connections. If everything still looks right but there’s no sound, check for a Fire OS update under Settings > My Fire TV (or Device & Software) > About > Check for Updates.
Save a factory reset for a bigger audio problem
We wouldn’t wipe Fire TV because one app lost sound. But if every app remains silent after testing the TV speakers, restarting, changing the audio format, checking HDMI, and updating Fire TV, a factory reset becomes more reasonable.
Open Settings > My Fire TV (or Device & Software) > Reset to Factory Defaults and follow the prompts.
The reset removes your apps, accounts, and preferences, so have your Amazon and streaming logins handy before starting over.
