A Fire TV™ update usually takes care of itself, so it's a little unsettling when the download freezes, an error pops up, or the same update keeps showing up without ever installing.

Check how much storage is left

Updates need somewhere to unpack, so a Fire TV that's nearly full is one of the first things we'd rule out. Open Settings > My Fire TV (or Device & Software) > About > Storage.

Give Fire TV a fresh start

If there's plenty of storage but the update is stuck midway through downloading or installing, restart the Fire TV from Settings > My Fire TV (or Device & Software) > Restart. You can also unplug it for about a minute, reconnect it, and try the update again once the home screen loads.

Pay attention to what happens during the download

An update that starts normally and then repeatedly stalls makes us more suspicious of the connection. The easiest test is to stream something for a few minutes. If that buffers, freezes, or drops quality too, restart the router and let Fire TV reconnect before attempting the update again.

Try the update again

Once you've ruled out storage and connection problems, go to Settings > My Fire TV (or Device & Software) > About > Check for Updates and try the installation again.

At this point, we'd mostly leave the Fire TV alone. Keep it connected to power and Wi-Fi, and don't unplug it if the screen goes dark or the device restarts during installation. That's normal during some updates.

Save a factory reset for a truly stubborn update

If the same update repeatedly fails despite having plenty of storage and a stable connection, a factory reset becomes more reasonable.

Open Settings > My Fire TV (or Device & Software) > Reset to Factory Defaults and follow the prompts. It'll erase your apps, accounts, and preferences, so have your Amazon and streaming logins handy before you start.
