You click an app and wait. Open a browser tab and wait some more. By the time an HP® laptop starts making every simple task feel like a coffee break, it’s tempting to assume the computer is just getting old.

Sometimes it is. But plenty of slow HP laptops are being held back by something much easier to fix—background programs, low storage, unfinished updates, or too much heat. Check what’s using your laptop’s resources

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then look at the Processes tab. Pay attention to the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns. If one app is sitting near the top and using a large share of a resource even though you aren’t really using it, that’s a useful clue.

A few browser tabs probably aren’t a crisis. Forty tabs, a video call, cloud backup, antivirus scan, and a game launcher all waking up together? That can make even a decent laptop feel tired.

If everything settles down once a heavy app closes, keep the troubleshooting focused there rather than treating the whole HP laptop as slow.

Restart and finish pending updates

If it’s been a while since the laptop restarted, do that next. A normal restart clears temporary processes and gives Windows a clean start without removing files or settings.

Then check for updates:

1. Open Settings.
2. Select Windows Update.
3. Select Check for updates.
4. Install available updates and restart when prompted.

Also check HP Support Assistant for current drivers, firmware, and BIOS updates. Open HP Support Assistant, select the laptop, and review available Updates. This is especially important if the slowdown started after a big Windows update. Sometimes Windows finishes its side of the job before every driver and background update has caught up.

Trim startup apps you don’t need

Programs that start automatically can make Windows feel slow before you’ve even opened anything yourself.

Open Task Manager, choose Startup apps, and review what launches when Windows starts.

• Disable programs you recognize and don’t need running immediately.
• Leave unfamiliar system, driver, security, and HP components alone unless you know what they do. The goal is fewer unnecessary background apps—not a guessing game with system software.

Restart afterward and pay attention to the difference. A faster startup after trimming a few apps tells you the laptop still has some speed left in it.

Check your available storage

Windows needs free storage for updates, temporary files, paging, and normal background work. Open Settings > System > Storage and see how full the main drive is. If it’s packed, start with things you can safely remove:

• Downloads you no longer need.
• Large videos or installers already backed up elsewhere.
• Apps you no longer use.
• Temporary files Windows identifies as safe to remove.
• Files sitting in the Recycle Bin.

Heat can make an HP laptop feel slow

A laptop that gets hot and slow at the same time may be throttling performance to cool itself.

Put it on a hard, flat surface and make sure the vents underneath and along the sides aren’t blocked. If they’re dusty, shut the laptop down, unplug it, and use short bursts of canned air to clear the vents. Then let the laptop cool and test the same task again.

Run HP’s performance and hardware tools

A traditional hard drive is much slower than a solid-state drive, and a laptop with very little memory can struggle with modern multitasking. Depending on the HP model, adding RAM or moving from an HDD to an SSD can make a noticeable difference.
