We’ve all been there—you're in the middle of an intense game on your Xbox Series X™, and suddenly, there's a noticeable lag between your controller taps and what's happening on screen. It’s frustrating, especially when you’re trying to make that perfect move. If you’re dealing with input delay, you’re not alone, and the good news is, it’s usually fixable.

Asurion Experts, your trusted source for all things tech, have gathered some helpful tips to tackle Xbox input lag and get you back in the game—because every second counts.

What is input lag?

Input lag refers to the delay between pressing a button on your controller and seeing the action happen on your screen. It can happen for several reasons, like issues with your TV’s settings, the controller connection, or even network delays in online games. The result is that your actions feel out of sync, which can be especially frustrating during fast-paced gameplay.

How to stop input lag on Xbox Series X

Input delay on your Xbox Series X is easy to solve with a few simple adjustments. Let’s walk through the steps you can take to eliminate lag and get back to smooth gaming.

1. Check your controller connection

First things first—make sure your controller is connected properly. Input lag can often be caused by a weak or inconsistent connection between your controller and console. If you're using a wireless controller, try these steps:

  • Re-pair your controller. Hold the pairing button on your Xbox Series X and your controller to reconnect them.
  • Use a wired connection. If the lag persists, try plugging your controller directly into the Xbox using a cable. Wired connections tend to be more stable and reduce input delay.

It’s also a good idea to make sure that your controller is fully charged—a low battery can contribute to input lag.

2. Adjust your TV settings

Your TV can also be a culprit in causing input lag. Most modern TVs have settings designed to enhance visuals, but some of these settings can add extra processing time, leading to delays. To reduce input lag:

  • Turn on game mode: This setting is available on most modern TVs and minimizes processing time, ensuring faster response times. In your TV’s Settings, look for a "Picture Mode" or "Display Mode" option and select "Game Mode" or "Gaming."
  • Disable motion smoothing or motion interpolation: These settings can cause a delay between your controller inputs and the on-screen action.
  • Check the refresh rate: Make sure your TV supports at least 60Hz, though 120Hz is even better for smooth gameplay. Some TVs have a "Low Latency" setting, which should be turned on for the best performance.

3. Use a high-quality HDMI cable

Not all HDMI cables are created equal. Using a low-quality or outdated HDMI cable can introduce input lag and make your characters stumble through the game like zombies, which is frustrating even if you are playing a game about zombies.

If you're using the cable that came with your Xbox Series X, it should be fine, but if you're using an older one, consider upgrading to a high-speed HDMI 2.1 cable for optimal performance.

4. Enable console performance mode

The Xbox Series X has several settings designed to prioritize performance. These settings help your console runs at its best, reducing input lag during gaming sessions. To enable:

  • Go to Settings > General > Power mode & startup.
  • Set the Power mode to Instant-on for quicker startup times, and ensure the console isn’t bogged down by background apps or downloads that could cause lag.

5. Check your network connection

Sometimes, the problem isn’t your console or TV, but your Wi-Fi. Slow or unstable internet can introduce a delay in your actions during online play.

  • Try using a wired ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi.
  • If you must use Wi-Fi, move your router closer to your Xbox or consider a Wi-Fi extender.
  • Close any other apps or devices that might be hogging your bandwidth.

6. Update firmware

Xbox routinely updates its firmware to add new features and improve existing ones that impact your gaming experience. If you’re not updating it regularly, it can slow down your machine. Make sure yours is updated by pressing the Xbox button to open your guide. In the Profile & System menu, select Settings > System > Updates. Follow the instructions to update your firmware. Software updates can fix a surprising range of issues, which is helpful for figuring out how to fix an Xbox Series X fan, Wi-Fi connection errors, audio issues, and more.

Also: update your controller's firmware (yes, controllers need updates too). Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then go to Profile & System > Settings > Devices & connections > Controllers & headsets. Select “...” under the controller you want to update. If it says No update available, your controller’s firmware is up to date.

7. Give your Xbox a fresh start

Just like us, sometimes your Xbox just needs a quick refresh. Doing so can often clear out any temporary hiccups that may be causing input delay. Hold down the power button for 10 seconds to fully shut it down, then unplug it for about 30 seconds. Plug it back in, power it up, and see if your input issues are resolved.
