How to fix a PS5 camera that's not working

Person playing PlayStation 5 in living room with PS5 camera that won't connect

The PS5® camera accessory lets you see yourself and your friends as you play, which is perfect for streaming games like God of War: Ragnarök™. But when your camera isn’t connecting to your PlayStation®, it can feel like game over.

Here at Asurion, we help you get the most out of your tech—whether its common issues your PlayStation might run into and how to solve them or learning how to protect your game console. Here's our guide to fixing a PS5™ camera that's not connecting.

Restart the PS5

If your PlayStation camera isn't connecting, try restarting your console. The restart forces the gaming system and the camera to try and reconnect, which is sometimes all it takes to get back up and running. To restart your console, follow these steps:

  1. Press the PS button.
  2. Select the power icon at the far right of the menu along the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Restart PS5.

Check your console's internet connection

An unstable internet connection is another reason your PS5 isn't connecting to the camera. Check whether your console is connected to Wi-Fi by opening Settings and heading to Network > Connection Status.

Next, try to run an Internet Connection Test to verify that your internet can support the camera. You can start that test by selecting Test Internet Connection on that same page. If your internet connection fails the test, restart your console and run the test again.

Try different USB cables and power outlets

A poor connection in your power outlet or your USB cable might be causing your camera connection error.

Take a moment to test different outlets and cables. Move the power cable to another outlet and cycle out the USB cords to see if those are affecting the camera. Remember: It's always better to use the USB port at the back of the console because it allows for a faster connection.

Change your camera settings

Even though your camera is connected to your console, it might not be properly set up. Check the camera's settings to make sure it's connected. Here's how:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessories > Camera.
  2. Select the camera, and follow the on-screen instructions to finish setup and to verify everything is turned on.

Move your camera closer

Is your camera still not connecting? Sometimes it's a distance issue—you might just be too far away from your device for it to work properly.

Use a camera adaptor

The HD camera for the PS5 isn't compatible with PlayStation VR. If you have a PlayStation 4 and want the option of connecting your PS VR to the newer console, you'll need a camera adaptor. Using one makes the PlayStation Camera—and the PS VR set—compatible with the PS5.
