How to fix Xbox Series X slow boot
When you’re ready to jump into a game, a slow-loading Xbox Series X® can really kill the vibe. If your console’s taking forever to start, you’re not alone—and luckily, there are a few easy ways to fix it.
At Asurion, we help people get the most out of their tech every day. If your Xbox is stuck on the boot screen or taking its sweet time to load, here’s how to speed things up.
Restart your console
A simple restart can fix minor software hiccups.
- Press and hold the Xbox button on your controller.
- Select Restart console, then choose Restart.
If the console is frozen, hold the power button on the front for 10 seconds until it shuts off completely.
Check for system updates
Running outdated software can cause performance issues.
- Press the Xbox button.
- Go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates.
- If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions.
Clear the cache
Over time, your Xbox builds up temporary files that can slow things down. Here’s how to clear them out:
- Power off your console completely.
- Unplug the power cable.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn the console back on.
Switch to Energy-saving mode
Instant-On mode helps your console start faster—but it can sometimes slow things down over time.
- Go to Settings > General > Power options.
- Change from Instant-On to Energy-saving mode.
- Restart your console.
Free up storage space
A nearly full hard drive can bog down your system.
- Go to My games & apps > See all.
- Highlight a game or app you don’t use.
- Press the Menu button and select Uninstall.
Disable apps from auto-launching
Too many background apps can delay boot-up.
- Go to Settings > General > Startup & shutdown > Startup settings.
- Turn off any apps that auto-launch when the console starts.
If your Xbox Series X is still slow to start up, don’t worry—your local tech experts can help. Visit your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store for a no cost console diagnostic and we’ll quickly get you back in the game.
FAQ
Why is my Xbox Series X booting so slowly?
Common reasons include software updates, full storage, or corrupted cache data. It could also be caused by Instant-On mode or too many auto-launching apps.
Does clearing the cache delete my saved games?
No. Clearing the cache only removes temporary files. Your saved data, games, and apps will stay intact.
What’s the difference between Instant-On and Energy-saving mode?
Instant-On helps your console start faster and download updates in the background. Energy-saving powers it down completely, which can help solve certain boot issues.
Should I reset my console?
Only as a last resort. If none of the other fixes work, you can do a soft reset by going to Settings > System > Console info > Reset console and selecting Keep my games & apps.
