Forgot your HP laptop password? Here’s how to regain access

💡 Need to know

  • Forgot your PIN? You may still be able to sign in using your Microsoft account password.
  • Microsoft account passwords can be reset online. Use Microsoft's account recovery tools to regain access.
  • Local accounts work differently. Security questions or another administrator account may help you get back in.
  • Save a factory reset for last. It can remove apps, settings, and potentially important files.

You sit down at your HP® laptop, type the password you've used a hundred times, and Windows says it's wrong. Again. Suddenly, remembering your own password feels like a pop quiz you didn't study for.

At Asurion, we've helped people work through plenty of Windows sign-in problems, and the trick is knowing which password Windows is asking for. Here's how we'd get your HP laptop unlocked.

How to reset a forgotten HP laptop password

The way back in depends on whether you use a Microsoft account, a local Windows account, or a Windows Hello PIN. Here's how to recover access without losing your files.

1. Reset your Microsoft account password

If you sign in to Windows using a Microsoft account, you can reset its password online.

  1. On another device, visit Microsoft's password reset page.
  2. Enter the email address associated with your Microsoft account.
  3. Verify your identity using the available recovery method.
  4. Create a new password.
  5. Connect your HP laptop to the internet and sign in using the new password.

If you no longer have access to your recovery email or phone number, Microsoft's account recovery form may help.

2. Reset your Windows Hello PIN

If you remember your Microsoft account password but forgot your PIN, there's no need to reset the entire account.

  1. On the Windows sign-in screen, select I forgot my PIN, if available.
  2. Follow the prompts to verify your Microsoft account.
  3. Create a new PIN and try signing in.

If that option isn't available, select Sign-in options and try signing in with your account password instead.

Once you're signed in, open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > PIN (Windows Hello) to change or reset your PIN.

3. Reset a local account password

Some HP laptops use a local Windows account instead of a Microsoft account. These passwords aren't managed through Microsoft's online account recovery tools.

If security questions were configured for the account:

  1. Enter a password on the Windows sign-in screen.
  2. Select Reset password when the option appears.
  3. Answer the security questions.
  4. Create a new password and sign in.

If you previously created a Windows password reset disk, you may also be able to use it from the sign-in screen. If neither option is available, check whether another administrator account on the laptop can help.

4. Use another administrator account

If the HP laptop has another administrator account that you're authorized to use, sign in to that account.

From there, an administrator can reset the password for a local Windows account. Keep in mind that changing another user's password this way may affect access to certain encrypted files or saved credentials.

This method doesn't reset the password for a Microsoft account. That still needs to be handled through Microsoft's account recovery process.

5. Reset Windows only as a last resort

If you can't recover the account through the available options, resetting Windows may be necessary. But we'd be careful here, especially if the laptop contains files that haven't been backed up.

From the Windows sign-in screen:

  1. Select Power.
  2. Hold Shift and select Restart.
  3. When Windows Recovery opens, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
  4. Review the available reset options and follow the prompts.
  • Keep my files attempts to preserve personal files while removing installed apps and resetting Windows settings.
  • Remove everything deletes personal files, apps, and settings.

A reset may require your BitLocker recovery key, and it isn't guaranteed to resolve every account-access problem. If the files on the laptop are important, we'd get help before proceeding.

What if your HP laptop asks for a BIOS password?

A BIOS or power-on password is different from the password used to sign in to Windows. It appears before Windows loads and protects access to the laptop's firmware or startup process.

If you've forgotten this password, the Microsoft account recovery steps won't help. HP's current guidance states that forgotten BIOS passwords cannot be reset through its standard support process and may require system board replacement.

We'd avoid online password-bypass tricks or unfamiliar recovery tools. If this is a work or school laptop, contact the organization's IT administrator. Otherwise, check with a qualified repair technician about the options for your specific model.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.

FAQ

How do I unlock my HP laptop if I forgot my password?

Start by checking whether you use a Microsoft account or local Windows account. Microsoft account passwords can be reset online, while local accounts may offer security questions or a password reset disk.

Can I reset my HP laptop password without losing files?

Often, yes. Resetting a Microsoft account password, Windows Hello PIN, or local account password through supported recovery methods doesn't normally erase personal files. A full Windows reset is different and can affect stored data.

What if I forgot both my HP laptop password and PIN?

If you use a Microsoft account, reset the password through Microsoft's recovery website. Then use the new password to sign in and set up a new PIN. Local accounts require their own recovery methods.

Can I unlock my HP laptop without a Microsoft account?

Yes, if it uses a local Windows account and you have security questions, a previously created password reset disk, or access to another authorized administrator account. Otherwise, Windows recovery may be necessary.

Will factory resetting my HP laptop remove the password?

Resetting Windows can remove existing local accounts and their passwords, but it also removes apps and settings and may erase personal files. It doesn't bypass a BIOS password or remove every account and device security requirement.
