An Amazon® Fire TV™ doesn't need dozens of apps before it starts running out of storage. A few streaming services, cached files, and months of temporary data are often enough to slow things down or trigger a low-storage warning.

See what's using your storage

Before deleting anything, see where the space actually went.

Open Settings > My Fire TV (or Device & Software) > About > Storage, then head to Applications > Manage Installed Applications. Some Fire TV models let you sort apps by size, making the biggest offenders easy to spot.

Once you know what's taking up space, deciding what to remove becomes much easier.

Remove the apps you won't miss

Start with apps you genuinely don't use anymore. Old games, free trials, and streaming services you haven't opened in months are usually the quickest way to reclaim meaningful space. Built-in Fire TV apps generally can't be removed, so focus on the optional ones first.

Delete a couple of larger apps, then check your available storage again. You may find you've already solved the problem without removing much at all.

Clear the app cache

Sometimes the app itself isn't taking up much space—it's everything the app has accumulated over months of streaming.

Every movie poster you've scrolled past, temporary streaming files, and bits of saved information can build up over time. That's exactly what Clear Cache is designed to remove.

Open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, choose the app, then select Clear Cache. In most cases, you'll free up space without signing out or changing your settings, which is why it's almost always the first cleanup step we'd recommend.

Save Clear Data for stubborn apps

If clearing the cache didn't free up enough space—or one app is still acting up—Clear Data is the next step.

Open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, choose the app, then select Clear Data.

Unlike clearing the cache, this resets the app much closer to a fresh install. You may lose downloads, preferences, and login information, so we usually save it for apps that are misbehaving or storing an unusually large amount of data.

Restart Fire TV

If you've already deleted apps and cleared cache and the storage number still isn't dropping, your device may need a fresh start.

Restart the device from Settings > My Fire TV (or Device & Software) > Restart, or unplug it for about a minute before plugging it back in.

Install any available updates

Now that you've freed up some space, open Settings > My Fire TV (or Device & Software) > About > Check for Updates and install any available Fire OS updates. If updates were failing before, there's a good chance they'll install normally now.

Before buying a USB drive or adapter, make sure your Fire TV model actually supports external storage.

Even on compatible models, some apps and system files will always stay on the device itself. Extra storage can certainly help, but it's better at giving you breathing room than replacing regular cleanup.

Factory reset only if nothing else works

If you're still getting low-storage warnings after uninstalling apps, clearing cache, restarting, and updating Fire TV, a factory reset may be worth considering. It will remove your apps, accounts, and settings, so make sure you know your login information before you begin.

To reset Fire TV:

1. Open Settings.
2. Select My Fire TV (or Device & Software).
3. Choose Reset to Factory Defaults.
4. Confirm the reset.
