How to fix a GE dishwasher that's not draining

Image of appliances covered by Asurion Appliance Plus

⚡ Fast fix

  • Start with the filter. It's the most common reason a GE dishwasher won't drain.
  • Smells a little funky? A developing clog can leave behind water and odors before drainage stops completely.
  • Follow the water. Check the drain hose for kinks or blockages.
  • Pump problems come later. We usually rule out filters and clogs before suspecting mechanical failures.

If your GE® dishwasher isn't draining and you're finding standing water at the bottom after every cycle, it's easy to assume something expensive has failed.

We get why. Nobody opens the dishwasher expecting to find a small pond where the clean dishes should be.

But after troubleshooting a lot of drainage complaints over the years, we've learned that most dishwasher drainage problems start much smaller than people think. More often than not, the issue is a blockage somewhere in the system, not a failed pump or major repair.

That's why we always check the simple explanations first.

Check the drain filter first

If we're diagnosing a GE dishwasher that won't drain, the filter is usually our first stop.

One thing we see all the time is a filter that's packed with food particles, grease, or debris. Sometimes people don't realize the filter needs regular cleaning. Other times they know it's there but simply haven't checked it in a while. Either way, clogged drain filters are far more common than pump failures.

Pull the filter out and check for:

  • Food debris.
  • Grease buildup.
  • Labels or packaging.
  • Broken glass or foreign objects.

Even households that rinse dishes before loading them can end up with a clogged filter over time. Cleaning it thoroughly may be all it takes to get the dishwasher draining again.

Watch for the early warning signs

Most dishwasher drainage problems don't appear overnight. In our experience, the dishwasher usually starts dropping hints long before it stops draining completely.

Maybe there's a little water left behind after a cycle, but it eventually disappears. Maybe there's a funky smell that keeps returning no matter how often the dishwasher runs. Those are often signs that water is moving more slowly through the system because a clog is beginning to form.

It's easy to ignore those symptoms when the dishwasher is still technically working. But they're often the earliest sign that a larger drainage issue is developing.

Check the dishwasher drain hose

If the filter looks good, the next thing we think about is where the water goes after it leaves the tub.

The drain hose carries wastewater out of the dishwasher. If that hose becomes kinked, clogged, or restricted, water can back up inside the appliance.

Look for:

  • Sharp bends in the hose.
  • Visible kinks.
  • Signs of buildup or blockage.
  • Anything that could be restricting flow.

Depending on how your dishwasher is installed, you may need to pull it forward to access the hose. It's a little more involved than cleaning the filter, but it's still a safe place to check before moving on to more complicated possibilities.

Before you blame the drain pump

Drain pumps absolutely fail. The difference is that we simply don't see them fail nearly as often as filters clog. That's why we try to answer a simple question first: Is the water being blocked, or is something failing mechanically?

If you've already cleaned the filter and checked the drain path, and the dishwasher still won't drain, that's when the drain pump starts moving higher on our list. At that point, the issue may no longer be a blockage. It may be that the component responsible for moving the water has stopped doing its job.

When it's time to bring in a pro

If you've cleaned the filter, checked the drain hose, and you're still finding standing water after every cycle, it's probably time for a professional diagnosis.

At that point, the problem may involve the drain pump, internal mechanical components, or other parts of the drainage system that aren't easily accessible without disassembly.

FAQ

Why is there water sitting in the bottom of my GE dishwasher?

A clogged drain filter is one of the most common causes, although blockages in the drain hose or drain system can also prevent proper drainage.

Does a dirty filter really stop a dishwasher from draining?

Yes. In our experience, drain filter issues are significantly more common than drain pump failures.

Why does my dishwasher smell bad after a cycle?

Persistent odors can be an early sign that food debris is building up in the filter or drain system.

Can I check the dishwasher drain hose myself?

Usually, yes. Just keep in mind that accessing the hose may require moving the dishwasher depending on the installation.

How do I know if the drain pump is bad?

If you've already ruled out filter and drain-line blockages and the dishwasher still won't drain, the drain pump may need to be tested or inspected.
