GE dishwasher won’t start? What to check first

Isolated product image of a silver GE dishwasher on a green background

💡 Need to know

  • Start with the door. A dishwasher that isn't fully latched won't start a cycle.
  • Don't assume it's broken. Power issues, tripped breakers, and loose plugs are common culprits.
  • Try a reset first. Sometimes a five-minute power reset is enough to get things working again.
  • No lights, no sounds, no response? Check the power supply before digging deeper.

You load the dishes, add detergent, press Start... and nothing happens. No lights. No sounds. No reassuring hum that tells you the cycle has begun.

Before assuming your GE® dishwasher needs a major repair, it's worth checking a few simple things first. Asurion Experts troubleshoot appliance issues every day, and many dishwasher startup problems come down to a handful of common causes that are surprisingly easy to overlook. Here are the first things we'd check.

1. Make sure the door is fully latched

A GE dishwasher won't run if it thinks the door is open. Even if the door looks closed, the latch may not be engaging properly.

Our experts see door latches and door-related sensors cause startup issues more often than many people expect. The latch itself can wear out, the sensor can fail, or the dishwasher can simply lose track of whether the door is securely closed.

Open the door and close it firmly. Listen and feel for the latch engaging. If the door feels loose, doesn't click securely into place, or requires extra pressure to stay shut, you've found a likely starting point.

2. Verify the dishwasher is getting power

Before moving on to more complicated troubleshooting, take a minute to rule out power issues.

It sounds obvious, but we've seen plenty of "broken" dishwashers that turned out to be unplugged, connected to a dead outlet, or sitting behind a tripped breaker.

Check the following:

  • Make sure the dishwasher is plugged in securely.
  • Check the circuit breaker.
  • Look for any recently tripped breakers.
  • Test the outlet if possible.

If another appliance won't work from the same outlet, the issue may not be the dishwasher at all.

3. Consider the door sensors

Sometimes the latch isn't the problem—the sensor is.

Modern dishwashers rely on sensors to confirm the door is closed before allowing a cycle to start. If that sensor fails, the dishwasher may refuse to run even when everything appears normal from the outside.

Signs of a possible door-sensor issue include:

  • The dishwasher won't start despite being latched.
  • The controls appear unresponsive.
  • The problem comes and goes intermittently.

These issues can be tricky to diagnose because the sensor is hidden inside the door assembly, but they're common enough that they're always on our checklist.

4. Try a hard reset

Dishwashers have software too. And just like a phone, tablet, or computer, that software can occasionally get stuck.

One of the first troubleshooting steps we recommend is performing a hard reset by cutting power to the dishwasher for several minutes. To do it:

  1. Turn off the dishwasher's circuit breaker.
  2. Leave it off for about 5 minutes.
  3. Restore power.
  4. Try starting a cycle again.

It's a simple step, but it can resolve temporary control board and software glitches.

5. Look for control panel issues

If the dishwasher has power and the door is securely latched, the control panel may be the next place to look.

Buttons that don't respond, flashing lights, or controls that behave inconsistently can all point to a problem with the user interface or electronics inside the door.

Pay attention to:

  • Unresponsive buttons.
  • Flashing or blinking lights.
  • Partial displays.
  • Controls that only work sometimes.

A hard reset may resolve the issue, but if the controls continue acting up, further diagnosis is usually needed.

When it's probably time for a repair

If you've worked through these checks and the dishwasher still won't start, it's probably time for a closer look. While some homeowners feel comfortable opening the door panel to inspect for loose wiring or moisture, we generally recommend calling in an appliance pro before disassembling the dishwasher and replacing parts yourself.

Modern dishwashers rely on multiple sensors, switches, and electronic controls that can be difficult to diagnose without the right tools. In many cases, professional diagnosis is the fastest path to an answer.

FAQ

Why won't my GE dishwasher start even though it has power?

A faulty door latch, bad door sensor, control panel issue, or software glitch can all prevent a dishwasher from starting even when power is available.

How do I reset a GE dishwasher?

Turn off power to the dishwasher at the circuit breaker for about 5 minutes, then restore power and try starting a cycle again.

Can a bad door latch keep a dishwasher from starting?

Yes. If the dishwasher can't confirm the door is closed and locked, it won't begin a wash cycle.

Why are the lights on but the dishwasher won't run?

This often points to a latch issue, door sensor problem, or control board fault rather than a power problem.

Is it worth repairing a dishwasher that won't start?

In many cases, yes. Startup problems are often caused by individual components like latches, sensors, or controls that can be repaired without replacing the entire appliance.
