In this guide:

How to back up data on your iPad

You can back up data on your iPad using iCloud® or your MacBook®. It's easy. We'll show you how.

Back up your iPad to iCloud

Before you get started, make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi and that you have your Apple® ID and password to sign into iCloud—if you need help, check out our guide on how to set up iCloud. Then follow these simple steps:

  1. Tap Settings, then tap on your name at the top.
  2. Tap iCloud, then select Device Backups.
  3. Tap iCloud Backup.
  4. Toggle on Back Up This iPad. Your tablet will now automatically back up when it's connected to power, locked, and on Wi-Fi.

For a one-time, manual backup, follow steps 1–3 above, then tap Back Up Now.

When you begin a backup, make sure to stay connected to your Wi-Fi network until the process completes. To make sure that the backup is finished, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup. The time of the last successful backup should appear on the screen.

FAQ

Does backing up my tablet save my game progress?

Usually, yes. Most modern games save your progress automatically to cloud networks like Apple Game Center or Google Play Games. Just make sure you're logged into your account inside the game.

Will backing up use up my cellular data?

Not by default. Tablets are smart enough to wait until you are securely connected to Wi-Fi and plugged into power before running a full system backup.

What happens if I run out of cloud storage?

Your tablet will stop backing up and send you a "Storage Full" alert. You'll need to clean out old files, or pay a small monthly fee to upgrade your space.

If I delete a photo on my tablet, is it gone from the backup too?

Yes. Cloud backups act like a mirror. If you delete a photo from your camera roll, it will disappear from your backup during the next sync.
