What you’ll need

Here’s what’s safe to use:

  • Compressed air
  • A soft flashlight
  • A wooden or plastic toothpick (carefully)

Avoid:

  • Metal tools
  • Liquids or cleaning sprays
  • Cotton swabs that can leave fibers behind

1. Turn off your iPad

Before cleaning anything, power the device down completely. This helps reduce the risk of damaging internal components.

2. Inspect the port

Use a flashlight to look inside the charging port. You’re usually looking for:

  • Pocket lint
  • Dust buildup
  • Small debris packed near the back of the port

Even a tiny amount can interfere with charging.

3. Use compressed air first

Start with the safest option. Hold the can upright and use short bursts of compressed air into the port. Don’t hold the nozzle too close—gentle airflow is enough. This often clears the problem immediately.

4. Carefully remove stubborn debris

If something is packed inside, you can very gently loosen it with a wooden or plastic toothpick. The key word here is gently. You don’t want to scrape or bend the tiny connectors inside the port. If the debris doesn’t come out easily, stop before forcing it.

5. Test the charger again

Plug your charging cable back in and check the fit. A clean port should feel:

  • More secure
  • Less loose
  • More consistent while charging

If you still have to hold the cable at an angle, the port itself may be damaged.

Signs the charging port may be damaged

Sometimes cleaning isn’t enough. A damaged charging port may:

  • Feel loose no matter what cable you use
  • Disconnect randomly
  • Only charge at certain angles
  • Stop recognizing accessories entirely

That usually points to worn or damaged internal connectors—not dirt.
